Experts attribute it to hundreds of thousands of Patriots fans' jaws
hitting the floor...

Boston has fairly high seismic risk rating due to a large earthquake
in 1755.

No. They won in 1783. |

Hi Jo! I missed the book review you wrote for Geotimes' November issue, but
I see somebody has taken issue with it in the current issue (Letters).
What say you?

Haven't seen the reply. Letters aren't part of GeoTimes' online
offerings, either. I'll let you know, but hey, all book reviews are
opinions, and people are perfectly free to have differing opinions.
That's why reviews are published.

Hi Jo,
All to true. There was a book review in Physics Today of Susan's book
on Richter and the person said he wasn't happy because he wanted to
know more about the machine than the man and of course Susan's book is
about the man behind the machine.
Perhaps he forgot to read the secondary titlle??? LOL

Draw a line from Boston to Ottawa. It is called the Ottawa Trend. It is
a source of small earthquakes. |

Hi Brian,
I'm fairly confident that the book reviewer did not make the mistake. He has
been misquoted by Petra, who most likely HAS made the mistake, and was
working from an imperfect memory. Her lack of response suggests she may have
discovered that mistake. What about it Petra? Are we to understand that "the
world's greatest earthquake predictor," one who is conducting "research" and
emplacing "instruments," was not aware that Richter's (and Gutenberg's)
invention was, essentially, a single piece of paper and a concept? Have you,
who so often attempts to don the mantle of scientific knowledge and
understanding of things seismological, not even read his "Elementary
Seismology"?
Perhaps, Petra, you're put off by his statement that ". . . harping on
prediction is something between a will-o'-the-wisp and a red herring.
Attention is thereby diverted away from positive measures to eliminate
earthquake risk".
