In television views of the ISS I can see the Russian vehicles. Is it
possible to tell the difference between a Soyuz and Progress from the
outside? If so, could someone describe the difference? Thanks in
advance.

Soyuz has a narrower "neck" than Progress due to having separate orbital
and descent modules, while Progress has just one big compartment. Soyuz
also has a periscope extending from the descent module that Progress lacks.

http://www.russianspaceweb.com

as well, http://www.spaceflight.nasa.gov/gallery and choose just anout
any space station expedition number for images of both.

Soyuz has tiny windows, progress doesn't :-)

Soyuz has the propulsion module, the pressurised descent module, and
pressurised orbital module.

Progress has the propulsion module, unpressurised bulk cargo module
(fuel, O2, N2 etc), and a pressurised cargo module.

Pictures of progress are actually hard to find because it is usually
either docked behind a Soyuz, or at the aft end of the station and there
aren't many pictures showing it in its entirety.

However:

Soyuz:

Progress:

(this one requires you use the hi res image and look at the progress
docked to the aft end of the station.

Many thanks Jorge and John for the info and links.

Anyone know how they get rid of all that insulation or whatever that is
covering the descent stage of the Soyuz? Something fancy or just let it burn
off on the way down?

The heatshield is under the insulation material.
