Genetics specifically relates to DNA (and sometimes RNA), because that
is how traits are passed from one organism to another.
You're correct when you say that the term genetics is limiting. That's
the idea. When one says that a trait or disease is "genetic," that means
the trait or disease is at least partly passed on in the genes.
You're incorrect when you say that it clouds the big picture. Rather, by
limiting what the word means, you making the big picture clearer. So
when one says something is passed on genetically, we know that the
person is saying that it is passed on, at least in part, through the genes.
