Petra has a predeliction for breaking heads which doesn't suit her, so
she no longer posts to Usenet. She sent me something a few days back I
thought aught to be posted but we had to agree to disagree about that.

You'll have to seach her site for it.

She just sent me news that she'd predicted the 7.4 M reproduced from
her page below.

Hi Mike,

Ok, all right already! I'm here. Are you happy now?

I had hoped the Travelers Forecast would have been good enough for a
few days, however in light of the New Zealand earthquake the world is
going to stop popping off more events and I'll have to decide how to
address the new warning necessities.

However, presently I will say that people living from Central
California to the Mexico Border should expect increased activity and
from there down through Mexico into Central America the same and
Ecuador should expect quakes in the 4.0 or greater category.

But what are we going to do about eastern Turkey and Syria?? Tune in
at 11.

Cheerio!

Wouldn't it just be easier to list the areas NOT at risk?

Oh - and the time parameter seems to be AWOL.

Hello Williams,

Well he got you to reply. For goodness sake he might be brain damaged.
Would you want to belittle him in public if you met him in the street?

Leave him alone, at least he is less harmful than some of your

Hi Mike,

I found this article the other day and I think it's interesting:

Earthquake-related psychological distress and associated factors 4
years after the Parnitha earthquake in Greece

Received 7 November 2003; accepted 19 May 2004. Available online 25
September 2004.

Abstract

Exposure to earthquakes has been associated with psychological
distress and in particular the development of post-traumatic stress
disorder (PTSD). Earthquake-related psychological distress can be
longstanding. The present study involved 157 Greek survivors of the
1999 Parnitha earthquake assessed approximately 4 years after the
earthquake. Assessments were based on the Traumatic Stress Symptom
Checklist (TSSC). Using stringent calibrations for the estimation of
symptom presence 25% of the survivors endorsed at least 5 and 12% at
least 10 TSSC symptoms. Approximately 22% of the survivors reported
subjective distress and 15% impaired adjustment due to their symptoms.
Intensity of fear during the earthquake and participation in rescue
operations related to greater post-earthquake psychological distress.
The results suggest that the psychological consequences of earthquakes
can be serious and long-standing even when the magnitude of the
earthquake is moderate. Psychological treatments that have been proven
to reduce fear and PTSD symptoms need to be made available to the
survivors. Such treatments may also increase the survivors'
psychological preparedness and emotional resilience in view of future
earthquakes.

That's easy for you to say.

I woondr why people are afraid once they grow to understand the
subject? Perhaps they never learn.

We have people afraid of strong winds and those who fear
thunderstorms.

I used to fear both as a child. We had a Victorian school when I was a
child. The door of one classroom opened out to the yard. It was an
ancient double door whose seviceability I suspected and worried about.
This went home with me and every storm I would fear the gusts.

Funny I love them now and thunder too.

Humans are odd things. I just heard that only 14 out of 15 people
making the summit of Everest survive. Yet it's a popular attraction.

But . . . seriously, though! With nigh unto 3 million square miles (some 6.8
million sq. km) of the globe's prime seismogenic real estate listed, just
what is that list supposed to prove? Or accomplish? Especially since the
warnings are open-ended time-wise. But I guess the omission of time might've
been a good idea, since attentive readers are thus forestalled from, anytime
in the foreseeable future, pointing out that fewer than 25 (30% of 85 listed
locales) of the locations have had their predicted quake.

I guess a traveler could take the list as a recommendation. Each of the
locations has a 70% chance of NOT having a quake any time in the foreseeable
future . . . Good thing she has that disclaimer!

Oh, and Michael. I have been in long agreement with you about Thatcher,
Blair and Bush, and share your outrage over the corporate, conservative
cancer overtaking our respective countries. So a "chimp" I'm not. But Petra,
OTOH, is prime Faux News demographic.

Michael,

As you said so aptly, "understanding."

People address tragedy differently. In reading about what happened
the workers in New York after the 9/11 disaster it is apparent that
some will succumb to these events while others will address them head
on and on to work on solutions.

Today Habitat for Humanity (which is known worldwide for their
humanitarian housing work) has legislation before Congress asking for
funding for replacement housing after disasters in the United States.
This effort should be applauded!

And from the science sector we have Ridge2000, a multi-disciplinary
research program which is bringing ocean floor research to the
forefront.

How unfortunate it is that there is so much time wasted on arguing
small issues instead of supporting innovative ideas and new projects.

All predictions listed have 30% probability with a radius of 160km
from the listed epicenters.

Also note, this is an experiment, as are all of the other predictions
listed on this site. We do not accept any liability for any decisions
made as a result of using this forecast."

Wouldn't it just be easier to list the areas NOT at risk?

Oh - and the time parameter seems to be AWOL.

Hard luck pal, she's binandunangorn.

But don't let that stop you making empty gestures, you seem attracted
to futility.

But . . . seriously, though!

Mike,

Interesting commentary. However, there's much to consider as you
don't predict global earthquakes, you don't have any experience to
draw upon and this could be problematic for you because you have to
study what is current, rather than global statistics.

If you wish to compete, simply create your own web page and go for
it. It takes more skills than just building a page though to bring
traffic to your site and create media interest in your work. And the
public expects you to have a record of accomplishments as well.

Let me know in a year if you've created something new which has
worldwide appeal.

How unfortunate it is that there is so much time wasted on arguing

From an interview with Tony Benn, a member of Great Britain's

"According to Benn, the system should have to change for the people
instead of the people changing for the system. He described the chain
of thought that occurs when a radical idea of change is introduced.

"Someone has an idea, and first they are ignored," he said. "Then if
they continue they are mad, bonkers. Then if they continue they are
dangerous. If they continue still and succeed, there is not a person
who wouldn't say they knew about (the idea) first."

Since I have made a web page, and I have done the predictions,
does that make me more qualified?

Would you like my comments?

I don't if that counts for aught.

You are a very capable person in many respect but ineffably dull when
it comes to forecasting. But there again I have not been to your page
in a very long time and don't plan on visiting.

And I don't read much of what you have to say on here. Invaluable
though it may be.

Or not as is the wont of any alternative.
