(1) Is the Arabic name of the media outlet Al-Jazeera/Jazira
the same as the Syrian region Al-Jazira? (meaning "the lake"
in both cases)?

(2) Are the Slavic words for lake, e.g. Ru. ozero, Pl. jezioro, etc.
borrowed from Arabic?

Thank you.

both the Arabian peninsula and NW mesopotamia (hence the syrian province)
are knwon as al-jazi:ra(t)

:>in both cases)?

not lake.

: jazi:rah (pl. jaza:?ir or juzur) means "island", cq.

jazi:ra(t) . strictly "island" but it is used for any land substantially
surrounded by water (incl. rivers). more narrowly peninsula is *sh*ibhu
jazir:a(t) . MS arabic prefers the plural juzur .

: "peninsula". The name is given to Arabia, NW Mespotamia,
: Algiers (al-Jaza?ir) and Algeciras.

al-jaza:'ir "Algiers" refers to the islands in the harbor (AFAIK now
connected with landfill?)

No, that's Balto-Slavic *ez^ero(m) "lake", cognate with e.g.
Armenian ezr "edge, shore", PIE < *h1eg^h-er-

Thanks very much to both Yusuf and Miguel.

I'm working through the Arabic alphabet in preparation for a course
I plan to take. . It's a fascinating language and a beautiful script.

Don't know why jazira reminded me of ozero. Maybe I should
take a geography course too. :-(

I suppose so. And so is the country and city name Algiers, and the
Spanish city Algeciras. What herons have to with this I may have once
known, but no longer do.
