"Taiwan Issues Land Alert for Typhoon Krosa, Heads for Taipei

By George Hsu

Oct. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Taiwan issued a land alert as Typhoon Krosa
moved toward the island's northeastern coast. The storm is forecast to
make landfall on Oct. 7 near the capital city Taipei, the Central
Weather Bureau said.

Krosa, with winds of 184 kilometers (114 miles) per hour and gusts of
227 kilometers an hour, was about 490 kilometers east-southeast of the
southern coastal town of Erluanpi as of 6:15 a.m. local time, the
bureau said in a statement on its Web site. The typhoon was moving
northwest at 14 kilometers per hour and will be 280 kilometers
southeast of coastal town Ilan in 23 hours, according to the agency.

The eye of the storm is projected to be at latitude 24.9 and longitude
121.7, which is the Pinglin Township, a Taipei suburb, at 5 a.m. on
Oct. 7, according to the agency's forecast.

Typhoons and tropical storms frequently hit Taiwan and cause floods
and mudslides. The alert warned people to avoid seashore activities
and said those on ships should be vigilant.

With winds in the region of 160 knots this is a major situation:
http://205.85.40.22/jtwc/warnings/wp1707.gif

And judging by the way the North Atlantic is shaping up the impact is
going to be similar to the last spell where a volcano erupted in Yemen
and these large quakes occurred:

7.4M. 05:23. AUCKLAND ISLANDS, NEW ZEALAND REGION
6.9M. 02:08. SOUTH OF THE MARIANA ISLANDS

Note that although I am saying the Atlantic Chart for the UK region is
similar to last week, the ephemerides certainly are not. And thus the
likely places where any such geo-phenomena may occur are beyond me.

(Just as it would be beyond the reaches of the best forensic
technicians to forecast what sort of fingerprints a total stranger
might have. I'll leave the innuendo to Mike Williams et al.)

DONETSK, Ukraine (Reuters) - A methane explosion ripped through a mine
in Ukraine's Donbass coalfield on Sunday, killing at least 63 miners
and leaving 37 missing in underground shafts engulfed by fire and
smoke.

A trade union official said there was only a small chance the missing
would be found alive after the blast more than 1,000 metres (3,300
feet) underground at Zasyadko mine in Donetsk.

SYDNEY (Reuters) - A gold mine in Australia's southeastern state of
Victoria has collapsed after a landslide, trapping 27 miners
underground, police said on Monday.

"There are 27 workers trapped at various levels, up to one kilometre.
We have communication with one miner via mobile phone but it has very
bad reception," said Carina O'Grady, a spokeswoman for Victoria's
state police said.

No workers are believed to be injured and a mine rescue team has
already been organised, O'Grady said.

The accident occurred at Ballarat gold mine, owned by Lihir Gold Ltd
and located about 100 kilometres west of Melbourne.

Police Hunt for 2 in China Mine Blast

BEIJING (AP) -- Police were hunting for two men responsible for a coal
mine where a gas explosion left 105 people dead in China's second
deadliest mining ...

BEIJING, Dec 16 (Reuters) - China has issued arrest warrants for 13
people in connection with a coal mine blast that killed 105 miners
earlier this month, state media reported on Sunday.

The Dec. 5 gas explosion tore through a shaft in northern Shanxi
province where 128 miners were working, far more than the maximum 60
allowed, Xinhua news agency said.

"It was reported that the colliery managers delayed reporting the
accident to local authorities while sending another 37 workers down
the shaft for rescue operations," it said.

The rescuers never resurfaced, state media reported earlier.

China has the world's deadliest mining industry, with thousands dying
in gas blasts, collapses and floods every year. Scores die in rescue
attempts launched by mine bosses seeking to cover up accidents at
illegally-run mines.

Eleven people have gone on trial in north east China in connection
with a coal mine blast that killed 171 people two years ago, Xinhua
said in a separate report.

Apparently the Chinese government has "ordered provinces to close
small, unlicensed mines, which are where most disasters happen, but
rising coal prices on the back of an economic boom have meant some
owners have ignored the order." whilst wanting to get all the coal

I missed this one from the end of November:

Pilot error blamed for plane crash

Pilot error caused a Turkish plane crash that killed all 57 people on
board last month.

Initial investigations showed the pilot became disoriented while
preparing to land at Isparta in south-west Turkey, but further
investigation was needed, officials said.

The Atlasjet MD-83 was flying from Istanbul to Isparta when it crashed
on November 30, killing 50 passengers and seven crew members.

The plane was off its flight path when it crashed. The wreckage was
found seven miles from the airport, on a 5,000ft mountain.

Officials had said there was no indication of sabotage in the
disaster, which occurred in good weather minutes before the plane was
due to land.

Atlasjet, a private airline established in 2001, operates regular
flights inside Turkey and chartered flights to Europe and other
foreign destinations.

So do we see some mid sixes on the horizon?

I do. But then I am a kook.

Around 40 dead in Pakistan train derailment: police

KARACHI (AFP) -- A passenger train careered off the rails in southern
Pakistan early Wednesday, killing around 40 people and injuring more
than 100, many of them still trapped inside the wreckage, police said.

Rescuers struggled through the bitterly cold night to retrieve the
injured from the express, which was packed with passengers as Muslims
return home to celebrate Eid al-Adha, the festival of sacrifice, this
week.

The train was travelling between the southern port city of Karachi and
the eastern city of Lahore when 15 coaches jumped the tracks at 2:25am
(2125 GMT), officials said.

"The death toll could go higher," warned local police officer Yasin
Bodio.

I hope there isn't a worse mining accident nor an air or ship
disaster, the above were plenty. I'm almost afraid to go to bed.

What a downer to be able to do these things.

A 1032 mb High has just slipped into the sea of the east coast of the
USA. I was following it in another thread you may or may not have been
following. I would have expected it to disappear with the quake. Maybe
it has disappeared but it needs a human to tell the computer?

Here is the surface level air pressure chart I was using:
