New Scientist has a story about Wen & Levin' idea of a "string net":
http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg19325954.200-the-universe-is-a-stringnet-liquid.html

They claim that photons are strings. See also Wen's home page at
http://dao.mit.edu/~wen/ where he says:
"Light is a fluctuation of closed strings of arbitrary sizes."

Several friends have emailed them and asked how to deduce Maxwell's
equations from this idea. Neither Levin nor Wen responded.
Does this mean they cannot do it? What is the consensus in the
community? Can photons really be simple strands?
