I am cross-posting this because I could not find an exact group for it.
I am a former professional, now disabled who presented with a fever of
102 (with aspirin), severe sore throat, bad headaches, cough with
phlegm, nausea. Duration of about a week's time before seeing doctor.
For various reasons, I cannot obtain quality medical care here. The
doctor I saw prescribed azithromycin z-pak.
After the first dose of 500mg, my urine turned dark, and I broke out on
a rash over my feet. I immediately discontinued the drug and asked for
another and was given keflex.
After about a week of keflex, my sore throat was gone, my headaches
nearly gone, I am still feeling hot at times of the day but fever has
subsided as has the cough, but still present. My appetite has not
returned to normal, but has improved. I am sleeping alot and fatigue
easily. I still have bouts of low grade nausea and the rash although
abated reappears in the evenings and itches.
My doctor says my liver tests are abnormal and need monitoring; he
suggests retest in a month.I have never had hepatitis, I do not drink or
use illicit drugs. In researching this I found many patients reporting
liver damage and rashes from azithromycin and two lawyers soliciting
information on this online.
My question is, is there any way to make an educated guess as to a
prognosis from what I have given? Is there any treatment to reverse
liver damage from this? What questions should I ask the doctor who is
not very forthcoming. Is there any way to determine what the original
illness was?
Any sincere advice is appreciated; I am not looking to sue anyone here,
I just need some ideas on what I should be considering at this point. |

It all depends on the extent of liver damage. This would be guided by
knowing 1)liver enzyme levels 2)albumin, protime/INR levels, and then
if these are abnormal or if the doctor thinks it is appropriate, an
imaging study of the liver (usually ultrasound first- this will be
able to see if there is fibrotic changes consistent with cirrhosis of
the liver). Wait until you get all the information before jumping to
a conclusion. |

I forgot to mention, are you having any symptoms of liver damage, ie
jaundice (yellow skin), itchy skin, "varicose veins" on your abdomen
or face, fluid around your abdomen to make it look really big,
bleeding problems... there are a bunch of things associated with a
"really bad liver" that you can see just by looking at a person. When
these aren't present, the prognosis is typically much better. When
they are present, a liver transplant is often the only cure. |
