Yes. Celtic is a linguistic designation.

It may be a division of language, but I was always taught it was a
cultural (not ethnic) group. Language of course plays a central
identifier of the culture, but is not it's only, defining trait.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celt has an excellent summary of Celt, and
explores cultural and linguistic definitions.
Celt

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

The Celts are a European people that once inhabited a territory that
stretched across Europe from Turkey. Today, the term Celt is applied to
a speaker of a Celtic language. Celt is inaccurate if used to represent
an ethnic identity as Celtic refers primarily to a cultural and
linguistic family, not an ethnic one.

Celtic & Celt is a bit like Arabic and Arab.

The indigenous Irish have been oppressing themselves since Irishness

somebody or other.

Then, Mr. Pretz, you're obviously a member of the *in* crowd in the
indigenous dynamic Mr. Logan has suggested. If the Irish gov't decides
to adopt auld Dermot's principles of genetics and hereditary rights, and
boots out all the evil Germanics, Anglo-Saxons, and the odd Czech, there
won't be enough people left for a hurling match...

The Anglo-Norman invasion is past fixing.

Their descendants are probably busking in Grafton Street.

Why kick an Anglo-Norman when he's down?

A Mhiceal,

You discredit yourself by claiming Diarmid's website as evidence...

Well I did say *reputable* websites. www.dictionary.com for example.

You say above: "I thought you were Maori." as if I cannot both be of
Irish AND Maori ancestry at the same time...that notion is ludicrous.
Plainly I have Irish ancestry AND Maori ancestry, and whats more I can
prove it.

It wasn't 'Mike' who said "I thought you were Maori", it was me.

I rasied the point because I thought it unusual that a New Zealander
should be so interested in Irish politics. You explained your interest
in your previous post.

Out of interest, if I did accept your invitation to prove your Maori and
Irish ancestory, how would you go about it?

The Irish at one time were not viewed as "white" by the British

(since
"race" is a sociological construct anyway, and the definition back
then was such that many spoke in all earnesty of categories like "the
German race", "the Irish race", etc.).

The British Army as of as late as 1940 categorized recruits into five
races: Norman, Welsh, Scotch, Irish, and English?
[/quote:48ccf8147c]

I cannot confirm this historically, but it makes sense it would be so.

The Irish are notorious in Europe for having permitted Moorish admixture from Portuguese and Spanish sources.

"White" in this context refers to unbroken Indo-European heritage; similarly, the Slavs, Italians, modern Greeks and often, English and Americans, are seen as not "white."

Welsh, Cornish, etc are different populations from Normans (mainly Nordic), Bretons, Gauls, and Anglo-Saxons, among the other tribes whose remnants populate modern Britain.

This is not to lend any support for the conjecture above ("since
'race' is a sociological construct anyway").
