Israeli Soldier: 'Here's Why We Attacked the Liberty'

Anyone who caught the AP story on the coverup of the probe into the
attack on the USS Liberty last Thursday or the post by Ryan J. at
http://www.nationalvanguard.org , may recall that Admiral Thomas
Moorer’s panel suggested Israel may have attacked the American
vessel in order to blame the attack on Egypt and suck the U.S. into
the 1967 war. Years ago, an Israeli Underwater Commando told me “the
real reason” for the attack.
During the oil glut of the mid 1980s, I was taking commercial diving
work wherever it could be found. I lived in Fort Lauderdale and
would occasionally work for small diving companies in the South
Florida area, performing maintenance on ships at Port Everglades and
the Port of Miami.
One company was owned by a former U.S. Marine Diver. He had served
as an active advisor to Israel during the Eight Day War and met
Israeli soldiers, including divers. A couple Israeli divers moved to
Florida, where they, illegal aliens by the way, gained employment
with the former Marine’s diving company. I worked on a couple of
occasions with two of them. Yosi, the senior, had fought in the 1967
war.
One day out of the blue, Yosi started talking about the attack on
the USS Liberty. I barely remembered it, only recalling a
friendly-fire incident, as reported by the media. But, Yosi didn’t
know I was so ignorant. He must have assumed I knew the attack was
deliberate, as his US Marine colleague surely did.
He claimed they attacked the USS Liberty because the spy ship was
collecting intelligence on the movement of Israeli warplanes, and
the US government was giving it to Egypt.
According to reports published by the survivors, they were
investigating whether the Soviet Union had their advanced bombers at
Egyptian airfields. And they did.
The US may have had the incentive to control the conflict, rather
than have the Soviets come to the defense of its ally, Egypt.
Dogfights between Israeli and Russian aviators could easily lead to
war between the US and the Soviet Union. Nevertheless, Israel could
have simply “ordered” the US to withdraw the USS Liberty under
threat of attack without risking an end to the Israeli-US
“alliance.”
According to the AP report, Admiral Moorer of the Joint Chiefs of
Staff spent a year investigating the attack with his independent
panel of military officials. His suggestion that the motivation
behind the attack was to blame it on Egypt and draw the US into the
war for Israel carries the most weight.

[The decision to attack may have been made, of course, after
considering multiple reasons and probable outcomes. I agree that a
Lavon-like -- and 9/11-like -- manipulation
was likely a hoped-for result. -- Ed.]
