I haven't had any in weeks. I keep getting "Master file fetch failed". I
can't even get the website to come up. Is it just me or is everybody having
this problem? |

I don't understand why 'setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu' is not found ...
Look like a problem with the nameresoulution. You can test it with a
"nslookup setiathome.berkeley.edu"
Quote: BTW, am I right guessing that the first thing that should be loaded
via the grid is the SETI software (in its most recent version for
BOINC) ? I think so because I found no more any place to download
this software in the usual manner and because what is written on some
BOINC project website(s) suggests that it happens this way.
The boinc client downloads the setiathome app automaticly, after you
have attached to the project.
Quote: BTW it's not me or my PC that needs SETI and other grid projects,
so if 'they' want 'us' to run their projects (which in fact are really
interesting things) they should find time to help - or to publish for
all usual OSes and system config. a working 'way to start it'. If
this is not possible for so many users, I suggest that a small group
of (say a few thousand) users be first formed with which BOINC
could be thouroughly tested and brought to work.
You can post your problems to the help desk forums, too.
Also a good source for documentation is the boinc wiki.

I have tried this (in a "DOS box"). This is what I get:
Server: dns-cache-la1.sunrise.ch
Address: 194.230.1.71
Nicht autorisierte Antwort:
Name: setiathome.SSL.berkeley.edu
Addresses: 128.32.18.152, 128.32.18.151
Aliases: setiathome.berkeley.edu
(... end of nslookup answer ...)
Comment: the line after the blank one is a German line probably due to
my Windows (XP home) being in G., it seems to me that it means that
what follows is not quite 'official' - or something like that.
Litterally: "not authorized answer" (may-be not exactly, my English
might be not good enough and the ambiguities might differ in both
languages.) But may-be this is not important.
Now, question to you: what follows for my problem ? My impression
is that my connection, my internet access (= internet provider etc.)
and my internet options are such that there should be no problem
in this context, i.e. the nslookup-answer seems to show 'all OK'.
Please understand that I am more or less a newbie for what concerns
such 'low-level' internet commands like ping, nslookup and the like.
In fact I don't even know where they are documented.

I have stopped even trying since about 10 days. I tried my first
BOINC-Install. some months ago, but had problems with it and "not
much time for these things" - so I continued with SETI classic
"until the last moment" which was in fact already on Dec.12 when
Classic stopped working normally. Then I de-installed SETI classic
and BOINC, then re-installed BOINC which "looks now a bit better"
(I tried this time to apply the config. tips for my system with WinXP
and several users defined.) But when BOINC seems to be ready
to get data from the internet (and even when it asks for them) I only
get following messages, where I am using the %% signs to mean
"this line appears in red":

I was getting that as well. Ultimately I fixed it by setting it to go
through a proxy. Funny thing is that after I did that I could remove the
proxy and it continued to work. After reading some posts at the SETI
message board I discovered there's an issue with packet size. Others have
had the same problem and hopefully they will fix it in the BOINC software. |

That's probably "not an authoritative response", meaning that the DNS
server which provided the information wasn't the one actually responsible
for the domain, but one which retrieved the information and had it cached.
It's nothing unusual, and does not indicate a problem.

In the seti@home help desk forums has some users also reported some
problems with upload/download and attaching. A other user has posted,
that the scheduler sometimes dropping connections, if there is under
high load.

How do I set a proxy (on my PC which is stand-alone except for
internet access - when connected to the provider) ? I am not
familiar with proxies and have a rather vague idea of what they are.
My OS is WinXPhome and I have several users defined, one with
admin rights and two without (I prefer accessing internet with one
of the latter because it is an additional security against malware
trying to exec. things needing admin. rights)

How long might this take ? With your answer to the above Q. I would
not have to wait for that ... Tell me also how one removes the proxy
if it's not obvious in the context. |

Which boinc version do you use ? - Have you tried to installed the new

Can you access setiathome.berkeley.edu from a browser on the affected
system ?
Have you tried, if you attach to a other project from this system ?
Have to tried to detach an re attach to the seti project ?

It looks like the seti scheduler had some problems. A lot of user posted
the same issues.
Can you please try the points I have posted in my last posting. Also it
could be that if you retry the attach, to get it work.

I use commercial software that is probably not practical for you. There
are, however, public proxies you can use, it's what most of the SETI board
members with problems have done. Off hand I don't know any, but if you read
through the message boards at http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/ you should be
able to find some. A Google search for "public proxies" or "Public proxys"
might divulge some. You enable and disable the proxy in the options tab of
the BOINC client.
Note that your problem might have a different cause, and in that case a
different solution may be required. |

I have de-installed it and repeated the download and installation.
Despite the fact that the version seemed to be still the same (at
least the version number displayed by Win'XP on the properties-tab
of the installation exe-file has not changed, but may-be this is not
what matters because it may just be the installation software version)
I have now a better behaviour. "About BOINC manager" says (now) that
it is version 5.2.13, I probably did not try this before ...
I'm still getting some messages saying
"Couldn't connect to hostname [setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu]"
or "Couldn't resolve hostname [setiboincdata.ssl.berkeley.edu]",
may-be this is a problem with the internet connection: I use ISDN (and
not TV cable or xDSL with which you are connected whenever the PC
and Windows are on), BOINC says when it needs a connection but
not when I can close it (I don't let it close automatically by BOINC
because I like to use a connection for mail, news or web surf when
I have it) and I don't understand yet precisely what it is doing from
what is shown in the work and messages tabs of the BOINC manager.
Nevertheless it seems that by now 1 SETI@home WU has been treated
completely and the result sent back to the server(s) because I found
it acknowledged in the SETI website. Another one seems to have
finished work and the upload must have begun, but it probably has not
yet finished with the upload process, because: 1. its comment in the
manager says "uploaded, ready to give the message" (free, may-be bad
translation from German, because I don't quite understand what the
German text itself means) 2. when the 1st WU got at last acknowledged,
its entry in the work tab of B. manager had disappeared, but for this
unit, it is still there. A third WU has reached 98 % ...
Question: how can I activate the SETI@home graphics ? I'd like to see
them from time to time (with classic, this was always the case at
upload-download time) but don't want to use always BOINC / SETI as
my screensaver ... is there a possibility to see the graphics without?
(There seems to be a button for this purpose in one of the B. manager
tabs, but it is inactive, I wonder why.)
