Folks,

Astro-Physics will be featured on the Travel Channel and, more
specifically, tomorrow on the "Made in America" show. More details at
http://www.astro-physics.com/index.htm?whatsnew/madeinamerica .

Since all I get are the L.A. broadcast channels, it's of no use for me.

There are those who believe that life here, began out there, far across the
universe, with tribes of humans, who may have been the forefathers of the
Egyptians, or the Toltecs, or the Mayans. Some believe that they may yet be
brothers of man, who even now fight to survive, somewhere beyond the
heavens.

Thanks for the heads-up! I checked the channels on my dish and
by-golly the Travel Channel was there! It looks like the show will be
on at 7pm Mountain Daylight Time. Two other businesses will share the
same 30 minute episode.

In my neck of the woods there is no cable nor any 'local' TV
reception. It's either a satellite dish or 'fuzzy' and unreliable
reception from a city over 100 miles away. But hey, I have a dark sky
right outside my front and back doors ;-)

I'm looking forward to seeing the people, etc. behind the
're-invention' of the astronomical telescope. OK, so "re-invention"
might be a little strong; but before Astro-Physics, purchasing a
decent telescope was a bit more of a crap-shoot. IMO the company has
not only maintained its own legendary standards; but its mere
existence has helped raise the quality of astronomical telescopes (and
accessories) from many other companies as well.

Okay ... so it changed from a "crap shoot" to an interminable wait ? <g>

This should be a good program. I hope that AP fills half of the show (30
minutes).

Unfortunately it is only ten minutes. They will be featuring three
companies including AP during the 30 minutes.

Actually I hope someone stateside can provide a word or two after the
airing of the episode. Being in Europe where the Travel Channel
available to us is totally different with a base in the UK, we are left out.

Bummer,

Maybe someone that is into video ripping could record it and post it as a
bit torrent or some other file that can be downloaded by members of SAA?

I don't have the travel channel either. Don't know about Youtube's
policy, but could somebody maybe post it there?

You have to own the copyright or have permission of the copyright holder to
upload videos to Youtube. They will remove it if they find otherwise.

Here's a brief account of the brief episode (others are invited to
make additions and/or corrections):

For those unaware: John Ratzenberger, the host of the show, played the
character "Cliff Clavin" (the mailman) on the TV series "Cheers".

Rockford, Illinois -- home of a T-Rex . . .

Roland and Marge were shown ballroom dancing.

A picture of the Andromeda Galaxy was on the wall. Roland informed
John that the galaxy was about two million lightyears distant. The
photo was taken through the large refractor that was set up nearby.

John briefly explained how telescopes work -- magnifying distant
objects.

We were informed that Roland built his first telescope at age 12 using
a magnifying glass and spectacles.

Roland worked for Bausch and Lomb for 4 years.

The first product produced by Astro-Physics was a star-tracker.

Full-time telescope production began in 1984.

Astro-Physics now has a 22,000 square foot building and 18 employees.

Aluminum machine work was shown in progress. Marge served as a guide.
An employee was involved with the machining.

Equatorial mounts were shown -- capable of doing what Superman was
incapable of doing -- stopping the Earth's rotation.

Nothing leaves Astro-Physics until it's perfect. If a mount doesn't
perform as it should it's taken apart and re-assembled.

We're shown the difference between optical glass and window glass.

Roland shows John an image (of a window and/or doorway) on a wall
formed by a lens. The image is upside down; but the universe doesn't
care.

Some telescope assembly is shown.

Telescope optics don't leave unless they're 1/10 wave (green light) or
better.

1/10,000 inch accuracy in lens cells.

We're shown some machine glass work. Roland and Marge appear here and
there throughout the episode. IIRC, at least three other employees
are shown.

Roland is shown assembling an objective. If a speck of dust is seen
in it, the objective is taken apart and re-assembled.

The episode ends with a time-lapse set-up of a refractor on an
equatorial mount on the lawn in front of the building. John looks
through the eyepiece while "Twilight Zone?" music plays. John walks
around to the front of the scope, acts like he's flicking off a speck
of dust, returns to the eyepiece, and the music ceases -- apparently
aliens and/or UFOs are no longer visible when looking through the
scope!
-----------------
Not bad, but the episode was too short. A one-hour program would have
been preferred Wink

Ah, that is why AP exists today. He wants to redeem himself!

A huge thanks for taking the time to describe the segment. Very
interesting and entertaining!

I wish I can return the courtesy at some point.
