I have an RN from a diploma program and am interested in getting my
BSN. I've looked into many (Chicago) area schools. University of
Phoenix seems to have a good, fast-track program that is largely
Internetbased, but clinicals are done at area hospitals. Anybody have
experience with this school? Is it sufficiently well-regarded to get
into a reputible master's program? My ultimate goal is to get into
education.

My impression is that it has a good enough reputation but that it is expensive.

From what I hear, UoP has a good reputation. Does your employer offer
education reimbursement?

I don't really have an employer, as I work for an agency. One of the
concerns I have about U Phoenix is that there may not be enough
students in my locale working in a particular discipline. For example,
what if I'm the only student in Chicago who happens to be working in
OB-Gyne? I can't go to "my hospital" and ask to work in that dept.,
because I don't have a regular hospital where I work.... it's one of
the reasons I want to get my BSN -- to make myself more attractive to
potential employers. Having a 30-year old license but only 6 year's
experience and returning to nursing via a referesher program does not
make me an attractive candidate for many of the areas I want to
practice in. I am trying to return to the work force with a vigorous
and renewed committment. |

One of UOP's requirements is that you have a place where you can meet your
clinical requirements. You will also have to have a clinical mentor for
some of your courses. In my experience, the team projects are not clinical,
but academic-based, so it's not like you all have to go to the hospital
together. Your classmates are from all over the country, so your clinicals
are individually-based. I hated the team projects, BTW.
I had a similar employment problem. I've been a nurse for over 20 years but
hadn't worked at the bedside for six years when I decided I wanted to try it
again. I had a really hard time getting most places to take me seriously.
But I finally got my foot in the door last July, and now I'm going back to
ICU where I want to be. Are you working consistent hours as an agency
nurse, where you can claim it as meaningful work experience? If you push
hard enough, you will find something. It might not be your dream job right
away, but it will give you the experience to get where you want. |
