Letter: More Deer Means More Deer Ticks
January 18, 2007
Prepare
For prevention measures see:
http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/hd/westnile/wnvtick.htm
To the Editor:
Missing from "Does Gone Wild" was any mention of the health risks
associated with deer overpopulation. More deer increase the chance that
deer ticks infected with Lyme bacteria will come into contact with
people. Lyme
disease is a tick-borne illness best known for its bull's eye rash,
fever, and joint pain. If not diagnosed and treated in its early
stages, Lyme becomes a very complex infectious disease affecting the
skin, visual and auditory systems, joints, nervous system and heart.
Lyme disease is one of the fastest growing infectious diseases in the
U.S. and is epidemic in our area (40 percent of all cases in Virginia
are from Loudoun County; monitoring of the tick population by the
Fairfax County health department is underway).
I have seen too many individuals and entire families suffer physically,
emotionally and financially from this devastating disease to not
support measures to reduce the deer population in our area. Herd
management goes far beyond what type of bulbs to plant.
