Hello, I'm translating a devotional work from english to italian and
got stuck with the following sentence:
"God dragged in and flung about like a counter, in a game of barter".
It's said of the relation between God and the chatter of the false
devote. What is this "barter game"? What the counter?

This worshipper expects his service to God to be on a
quid pro quo basis of exchange. He gives nothing without
anticipation of return, without the thought that that God counts
his deeds or false fealty as something which places the divine
in debt to him.

I automatically assumed that the counter was some sort of token used to
represent the things being bartered - something like a coin.
But I may be wrong - I'd need much more context to be sure.

I think the counter here is that God supposed by the idolater. The
language permits the
deity to function both as an accountant and token in this scheme of
things. Not to deepen shallow waters with unfounded allusion, but it
could easily be said that the notion of "counter" here allows the
reader to imagine the supernatural father of the calculating worshipper
must be a "token god" by the pious fraud's false definition of the
situation.

If you mean something like http://www.abcog.org/jesus2.htm then I
understand it this way:
Half a page before the passage "God dragged in and flung about like a
counter, in a game of barter - " the text tells of the barters
(Barattatori, that is Mercanti) taking God and Heaven into every
sentence as witness to the quality of the product and the honesty of
the bargain. So now God is likened to a counter (Banco, Bancarella) you
put anywhere you need it for your trade (Dio come bancarella che ti
tiri dietro e sbatti qui e la [dove fa comodo], come al mercato).
Then comes the remark: "- but if you speak real meaning about God it is
blasphemy." He means: when the merchants are taking God as a counter
for their trade, the Phariseans find it all right, but when Jesus is
talking important albeit unusual things about God, his words they call
blasphemy.
