Hi all!
Here is a new program to convert GPS recorded tracks to KML(or
KMZ) files to be used with Google Earth:
www.claudegps.altervista.org
I know, there are already several programs doing this, but I needed
some features that I could not find anywhere else (like graphs and
arrows). So I wrote my own program
There is a brief manual and some screenshots.
If you want to take a look at the program and give it a try you can
download it freely.
Feedbacks are welcome! Especially if you want to suggest new features
to be added. New version is work in progress :P
Enjoy!
Claude
www.claudegps.altervista.org
PS: it works on Win, but also under linux with Wine. |

New Version is finally ready for download!!!
Here is an example of main new feature:
http://www.claudegps.altervista.org/img/example.jpg
You can now draw tracks, colouring them related to parameters like
Speed, Altitude, HDOP ecc...
In the example the colour of track is related to it's altitude.
There are other improvmente in the GUI, some bugs solved, added
options to draw 2d/3d arrows, new cool graphs (altitude variation and
satellites signal) and many others things that have been improved.
Of course, it's always free to download.

Have fun!

Thanks. But it doesn't appear to support the files from my preferred
GPS program, Alan Murphy's excellent 'GPS Utility'.
There seems to be a very limited range of supported file types?
Not that I really need another program. I can save from GPSU to GPX
and read that directly in GE.

Yes, the range of supported file types is limited. I think that there
is no need to support severa lformats as GPS Babel does it's work so
well...
I'll add the support to GPX in the future, but I think it will be the
only one additional format I'll add.
(Maybe I can add other formats only if I have enough people requesting
for it, but I'll suggest to use the excell GPS Babel anyway...)
Quote: Not that I really need another program. I can save from GPSU to GPX

Sure you can, but in this way you loose all the additional features:
No arrows,no altitude handling, no data plots, no multicolor tracks
related to parameters, no filtering and many other things
Examples:
http://www.claudegps.altervista.org/img/example.jpg
http://www.claudegps.altervista.org/img/Screen3.jpg
I think that the GPX import is not able to do things like those above
(If you can do this with GPX import, tell me how!)
If you just need to see your tracks in google earth, just use GPX.
If you need a more powerful tool to convert recorded GPS tracks to
KML, than I suggest to give a try to the program.
Thanks for your feedback |

I had wondered whether to suggest to GPSU's Alan Murphy that I'd like to
colour the tracks depending on speed. But sometimes my elderly GPS records
speeds that I am certain the yacht never attained...

Walking on English country paths, my trusty Garmin GPS 12 occasionally
reports I reach speeds of over 100 mph ;-)

OK, I would like try it, but as I said I cannot do so.
Since posting I also tried converting a typical GPSU TXT file to Ozi
PLT, but GPS Traks wouldn't import that either.

Ozi PLT files are supported. But I found a problem with the import
module that sometimes makes the perogram to stop working during the
conversion.
That's why is not working!
I'll fix it today :)

The problem with PLT import should now be fixed.

Can I ask you to send me the PLT file you are trying to use, if the
fix to the program is not successfull?
Thanks

My 60Csx doesn't get that crazy (except when you first switch it on),
but I do notice that the 'V' part of the PVT solution seems way whackier
than the position or time, especially when reception may be a bit
degraded (under trees etc.).
Walking at a (fairly constant) 6kph I see my 60csx reporting velocities
down to 4.x (always seems to come out low, for some reason), although
looking at the tracklog later there doesn't seem to be any big problem
with position, and looking at the screen there are still 8+ satellites
firmly locked, and reported 'accuracy' of +/- 3 or 4m, even while it's
lying by 50% about my speed.

I think that would be the best move. Support whatever format best fits
your requirements, and also GPX, to let people use whichever of the many
programs that support GPX that they would like. GPSBabel is an external
tool for the rest.

Thanks for the file.
I gave a look at it... but... the format is not compliant to
OziExplorer specs for PLT files! :-O
My PLT import module is based on the following:

clearly, your file is not in this format. I'm confused. Which format

I don't actually use OziExplorer and know nothing about the PLT
format. I used it just as an intermediary to try your program. So I've
emailed GPSU's author about it, and will report back here when I have
his reply.

Thank you very much Terry.
Unfortunately, I think that there is more than one PLT format... :-(
I hope to add GPX support to my program soon (I don't have much time
in this period...), this should solve a lot of compatibility problems
with the babel of GPS data formats.
