I have a question about setting maps in a garmin etrex legend.
I have mapsource v6 i think it is and i whant to send maps of my area
to the gps on doing so will i erase all other maps in the gps or will
it just update the portions of the maps i am installing? what about
getting my legend back to factory specs? i have heard i can get it
back to fact specs but looking at the website i dont find no files for
that?
any help will be apreciated.

All maps get erased. If you save the configuration with MapSource
before loading new maps, it will save the "map configuration", so that
the same map set can be reloaded the next time. You always lose the
POI/navaids database that came installed in the Legend, but that is
available for reloading from Garmin's web site.

To reset to factory defaults (warning: this erases all maps, waypoints,
routes, almanac, and owner info):

Hold the "up" and "enter" keys and then press the "on/off" button to
reset the entire machine. You will receive a warning prompt. It may
take the Legend up to 30 minutes re-acquire the almanac, so be sure you
can place it with a clear view of the sky.

I found this was necessary to get my Legend to detect the newer WAAS
satellite #51.

Do not confuse the base map with uploaded maps.

The base map is the rough world map which is built into your Legend in the
factory. This is hard wired. You cannot delete or overwrite it. When you
upload a detailed map of an area what happens is that whilst you are in that
area the Legend will (normally) display the detailed map in preference to
the base map. The base map is still there, though. You can even use one of
the setup options (I forget the precise menu path) to hide the uploaded map
and show the base map instead. You will also see the base map if you zoom
out far enough that your detailed map is no longer relevant.

When you upload a map it will indeed erase all previously uploaded maps but
not the base map.

This is true but the legend is also shipped with the marine
points-of-information "map", showing navigation aids etc.
This is loaded in the same way as a mapsource dataset and is permanently
deleted if you upload any other map to the handset.

Whilst you are unlikely to need the POI database, if for some reason you
really do require it or just want to resore your Legend absolutely to
factory condition then you can download an installation program from the
Garmin website.
