Can Miller 14 pin remote accessories be adapted to use with the 6 pin
connector on a Maxstar 150?

Thanks for any help,
Jim

I think they use a different resistance on the pot.

The owner's manual gives you the pinouts, but doesn't state the ohms of
the pot, only 0 - +10 volt DC control voltage.

OK I just asked my friend Tom who fixes welding machines.
He actually metered a Maxstar 150 remote and verified that it is 1Kohm
just like all the other Miller remotes.

You will have to get the connector from Miller though, since so far I
haven't found an Amphenol number for that connector.

You could just buy a different 5 pin connector in both male and female
and use that instead.

You might check with these folks. They carry a couple of 6-pin and 14-pin
varieties and may know exactly which ones you need:

Thanks, that's just the info I needed. I'm sort of surprised that this
hasn't come up in this NG before, or anywhere else that Google can
find. I'm thinking of getting a Maxstar 150 for road use, and just
wanted to be able to share my 14 pin remotes with it.

On a sort of related subject, I was thinking of just buying the stick
packaged 150STL, and using it with the 14 pin stuff, and an existing
air-cooled HW-20 I have. But I need a smaller Dinse for the torch. The
cable/hose terminates in a 3/8" male threaded fitting, and threads into
this 5 sided brass piece with a 50 series (50mm? I don't know Dinse
terminology...) on the end. Can I find a similar piece with the smaller
(25mm?) Dinse that the Maxstar 150 needs? My internet searching didn't
get me much useful info about that, either.

Thanks for the info, this was a huge help. They don't have it, but they
told me who did:

http://www.alliedelec.com/Search/ProductDetail.asp?SKU=932-3314&SEARCH=&MPN=EN3C6M&DESC=EN3C6M&R=932%2D3314&sid=45A6CF80249F617F

In case the link doesn't work, it's a Switchcraft EN3C6M from Allied
Electronics.

The guy from SSC was very helpful. They also have tig foot pedals,
including one for the Maxstar 150, and at a much better price than
those blue people.

Many times, the exact resistance of the potentiometer does not matter,
it simply functions as a voltage divider to give input to whatever
boards that read voltage that it is set to.

You're welcome. I've been saving that link for quite some time because
their prices are about 1/3 of what I paid for a connector from Digikey once.

CK Worldwide also sells universal adapter kits for TIG torches.

For reference purposes, here is a previous post I made about TIG pedal
connectors.

I added the Maxstar 150 stuff.

Quote:
So I went hunting for a real source of amphenol connectors so I can finally
buy
a few for hooking up remote foot pedals onto Miller TIG welders.

Well I succcessfully achieved this goal, and ordered 4 of them.

Here is the gist of it.

Go here to see all the applicable Amphenol connector catalogs

http://www.amphenol-aerospace.com/getcatalog.asp?ID=7

The actual catalog for 97-Series connectors used for Welding machine remote
connectors is this one.

http://www.amphenol-aerospace.com/catalogs/zip/12-022.zip

Once you have the number of the part you want you call one of these suppliers

Powel Electronics 800-235-7880
TTI Electronics 800-225-5884
Arrow Electronics 800-388-2277
AVNet Electronics 800-332-8638

The connector used by Miller for all 14-pin connections is a
#97-4106A-20-27-P,
with strain relief #97-3507-12

I just ordered 4 of each from Powel, at $18.20 each for the connector and
$7.05
each for the strain relief.

Quite painless once you know who to talk to.

Miller charges about $50 for that connector and theirs are plastic.
The ones I ordered are real Mil spec metal connectors.

The way Amphenol lists their parts is kind of simple.
They are all Series 97 connectors.
Next is what shell it uses, then the insert number
The core of a connector is the insert, which is specified by the diameter in
Millimeters and the type#, so the 14-pin connector used by Miller is actually
a
20-27.
After that goes an S for Socket or a P for Pin.

I also discovered the existence of an even better connector called the
Swiftmate.
They are made by Amphenol to be compatible with all existing screw type
Amphenol
connectors, but allow a simple push-on-and-lock operation.

http://www.amphenol-aerospace.com/catalogs/zip/SL-390.zip

The downfall is that they are too new.
Powel could get them, but I would have to order 28 of them at $29.75 each,
and
wait 16 weeks.

I would LOVE to have that connector for my portable Maxstar200DX rig.

For normal Shop use the screw type are fine.

The Amphenol connectors used for welding machines are:
New Miller 14 pin 20-27
Old Miller 5 pin 16S-8
Miller Maxstar 150 6-pin Switchcraft EN3C6M from Allied
Electronics
Lincoln 6 pin 18-12
Lincoln 5 pin 16-11
Hobart 5 pin 18-20
Hobart 10 pin 18-19

The guys at Central Welding told me they get their connectors at <

312 north 104 th street. Seattle. 206 789 7525. So that is where I
went. I think they are a bit cheaper than other places.

About the same price, but much more convenient if you are in Seattle.
