The logs on my website regularly show about 1/4% of the requests for pages fail
even though they are there. It is a something that happens and of varying causes
beyond the control of the software. The solution to all the reasons for the
problem is multiple servers of the same files which large businesses implement.
The most common reason is too many requests at one time. That is the zombie
extortion method used by the folks in Russia and Israel. If you are an
Izziehugger do not get excited. The Israelis involved are recent immigrants from
Russia, about a million in the last ten years. Technically a Denial of Service
attack but with millions of S@H users it can create its own DNS attack when it
goes down for a while.
The old S@H had a plea to wait a few hours to get new WUs. BOINC kicks you back
an hour when it is too busy. But that is the WU server not the main website.
Beyond that if S@H is locally hosted by the project then it likely does not
have the servers and manpower to transparently conduct upgrades and such.
