Nice to see an article about the deterioration of working and living
conditions for many people in the US iun the LA Times on Jan. 1.
Bring back the 40-hour workweek -- and let us take a long vacation

IT WAS A GREAT YEAR for labor — if you worked at a call center in
India, made your living as a CEO or sold real estate to big-box stores.
But deep in Cubicle Nation, the average American worker remained on a fast
track to the Industrial Revolution, with soaring workweeks, declining wages
and health, pension and vacation benefits vanishing faster than you can say
job security.

Ok fine..Im glad he said that. But thats not what its going
to take.
Unfortunately it will take solidarity of the entire middle
class to reclaim fair pay and reasonable working hours. ..
solidarity will not occur until the abuse goes completely
terminal.. then out of sheer desperation we will see
solidarity. too late to undo the damage though.

And I heard this morning on the radio, Boortz say if you want to become
rich in America you have to work more than 40 hours a week. So if you are
already working 40 hours, then get a 20 hour part time job, he said . Ha,
how utterly absurd. This coming from a man who predicted that Kerry would
defeat Bush in 2004. |

then get a new job, or STFU. The 40 hour workweek will never come back b/c
there is always someone willing to work the extra 10 hours for the same
amount of money. ALWAYS. |

In a flat world, (C) Tom Friedman, that certainly holds true. But in
European countries like Belgium or Germany, few people work longer than 40
hours per week whereas spending more time at work socially means "less
efficient".
