Hi,
Edmunds Scientific sells this pH tester and I thought I would
ask if anyone has had experience with it. Any opinions to offer?

I bought a cheap Hanna tester some time ago for hydroponics. They make them
in different grades. I think mine was a cheap Champ. Inthe end, I was very
unhappy with it. The electrode failed and the response was slow.
I bought a Corning Chek-Mite pH-20. It has been pretty good. One electrode
went bad. I now attribute it to getting too dry. I modified a jar to suspend
the probe in a buffer solution while minimizing evaporation. Since then, I
have had no trouble. One problem with this unit is the lousy waterproof
cover to the battery compartment. It was mad of a foamy plastic that did not
tolerate the screes holding it in place. I finally fabricated my own cover.
The trouble I had was buying it. It was a restricted product. I finally got
it from Wilkem Scientific in Rhode Island. I live in California. Our country
has gone collectively mad in fearing drugs, (hydroponic growth of marijuana)
terrorism, and law suits. I can understand being reasonably worried
terrorism and that something must be done about crazy law suits. Even though
Wilkem Scientific was willing to sell me the pH meter, selling chemicals to
me was not going to happen.

I agree but it seems every country has its particular hangups. For
instance in France it's illegal to own or use a Geiger counter. Maybe I
should be checking any French wine I buy for radioactivity? :)
