INTERVIEW: CHALLENGING CAMP DAVID
MYTHOLOGY, FOUR YEARS ON
Interview, The Electronic Intifada, 10 November 2004
On November 5th, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's
"As It Happens" program, rebroadcast in the US on National
Public Radio, featured former Middle East Envoy Dennis
Ross being interviewed about Yasser Arafat. Ross had
much to say about Arafat and Camp David. Clayton E.
Swisher, a former Marine reservist and federal criminal
investigator, was a VIP security guard at the Camp David
talks. Nation Books recently published Swisher's The Truth
About Camp David, which provides a devastating
counternarrative to the commonly held myths about Arafat's
intransigence and Barak's "generous offer" at the summit.
EI's Nigel Parry interviewed Swisher about Dennis Ross'
comments on the CBC program.

Whatever, dude -- the exact details of the "generousness" of the
Israeli proposal are a whole lot less important than the fact that
Yasser Arafat made no counter-proposal (i.e. he couldn't even be
bothered to keep up even a surface pretense or shallow facade of
appearing to be willing to seriously negotiate at Camp David). Even
if the Israeli proposal wasn't sufficiently "generous" for you, it's
an indisputable fact that the Israeli side _did_ in fact go beyond
their previous negotiating positions, and offered what they considered
to be about the maximum that the Israeli public would realistically
stand for -- and moreover offered negotiating terms that would get the
negotiators in trouble in Israel if the terms leaked out to the public
in some other context than that of a final deal -- while the
Palestinians not only didn't make any counter-offer, but couldn't even
be bothered to keep up a superficial facade of seriously negotiating
(which was why Clinton ended up being angry at Yasser Arafat).
However satisfactory or unsatisfactory the Israeli offer at Camp David
may have been to the Palestinians, the Israelis at least visibly made
a strong effort to bridge the gap -- while the Palestinians didn't
even bother to make an appearance of reciprocating, but instead merely
fell back on old tired stale positions and inflexible dogmatic
formulas, which they rehashed for the thousandth time yet again.
So if the Palestinians didn't want to be blamed by Clinton, then they
should have at least made some superficial pretense of an appearance
of making a negotiating effort (instead of merely chanting in unison
the mantra or dhikr of their past inflexible and dogmatic positions).
Dennis Ross has said many times that the only "new idea" which Arafat
himself personally presented at Camp David was some wacked-out
revisionist fantasy tirade about how supposedly there never was any
Jewish temple in history located on the Temple Mount!
