Over at Daily Kos there are some boastful statistics that appear to
indicate Scientology has more buildings than adherents.
I wonder why they didn't post them here?
-maggie, human being
many ways to work that scam.
tax dodge, laundered or other funny money is used to buy the
building....then the building is depreciated
against the reported income of those involved... eliminating tax
liability on their reported income.
the details can as convoluted as one can imagine... dozens of angles
on that,
left empty the building provides an operating loss, wich can be
deducted from the money invested to renovate it.
the cult, being international, and mostly with 'religious' tax
protection and other protections regarding donations,
can accept dirty money untraceably, invest it in the buildings, claim
the losses as mentioned, then spread them around
amongst to investors of record for tax losses.
many ways to get on that band wagon also...a building with 100 offices
could rent thousands of offices out, each renter getting
a full tax deduction, no way to conttest that since the details of
occupancy need not be spelled out... that is why imo you
see the buildings empty when they could be occupied... occupied you
can only rent one space to one company.

Speculation for Thought
Maybe David Miscavige has NO CHOICE.
Maybe when they brought that 500 million "back onto the books from
Hubbard's overseas accounts" and into CST, (See CST
Filingshttp://www.lermanet.com/CST/ ) they left another 500 million over
there that was NOT reported to the IRS.
Maybe they then formed a "Mortgage Lending Company" in Geneva... with
THAT money...run by John Carmichael's ex-wife.
Now, having NO INCOME, to keep their scam going, they BUY expensive to
renovate buildings for a pittance, then renovate them with "slave
labor" and children, and then get a huge assesment, and then apply
for a HUGE mortgage from their Geneva Mortgage company?
There is just one flaw in what you say, Gerry. Those buildings were
not bought for a pittance, and most of the recently purchased ones
were not renovated with slave labor, because they don't have enough
raw manpower or supervisory expertise to pull that off.
