Clinton angers Palestinian peace negotiators

Palestinian leaders have been angered by US Secretary of State Hillary
Clinton who has praised Israel for making so-called unprecedented
concessions in peace negotiations.
On the weekend, she congratulated Israel for offering to restrain
settlement growth in the West Bank.
She urged both sides to return to talks as soon as possible and backed
a call from Israel to deal with Palestinian preconditions during
negotiations, not sooner.
Palestinian negotiators then accused her of backtracking on earlier
promises to push for a freeze on settlement construction, killing any hope
of restarting peace talks anytime soon.
Israeli leaders have kept up calls for the Palestinians to drop all
preconditions, including the demands that Israel stop all settlement
activity.
On Saturday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told Secretary
Clinton that while the Palestinians wanted peace, they would not take it at
the price being offered by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Prime Minister Netanyahu has complained the Palestinians have imposed
preconditions that they had not imposed before during 16 years of
negotiations.
The Israeli leader has said his government will do unprecedented
things to jump-start the process, and the Americans, including US Envoy
George Mitchell, who is in Israel to assist in the peace negotiations, are
well aware of this.
He said he hoped the Palestinian leaders would change their minds and
start talks without delay. |
