Scholarship connects ethnic students with mentors

Apr. 6, 2004

By Pamela Crosby*

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS)-The United Methodist Board of Higher Education
and Ministry has launched a new scholarship program for ethnic high
school and college students interested in ordained ministry.

"Journey Toward Ordained Ministry" will connect mentors to 10 ethnic
minority high school or college students interested in pursuing ordained
ministry in the United Methodist Church.

Developed by the board's division of ordained ministry, the program
requires participation in a mentoring program and provides scholarships
of $5,000 each per academic year, with continued mentoring through
seminary and ordination.

Undergraduate students are required to attend a United Methodist-related
college or university, and master's degree students are required to
attend a United Methodist seminary or theological school. The program
will select additional students as participants complete their seminary
education.

Additional information is available from Saul Espino at (615) 340-7392
or by e-mailing
sespino@gbhem.org. Applications are available online,
www.gbhem.org/resourcelibrary.asp.
