I was searching the internet to find out how many Catholics there
are in the world, and several sites said 1.07 billion was
the most recent figure available. I thought I would share
this good news with the group.

The good news is that there are about 4 billion people who are not catholic.

A large part of those billion are in third world countries where
poorly educated people are easily fooled by cult nonsense.

The bad news is that some of those non Catholics are even worse

You need to keep up. Many Countries may be predominantly Catholic,
but the numbers are dropping.

Reminds me of the sign that was once etched into gates of Londonderry:

Enter Jew, Turk or Atheist.
Any man except a papist.

However, a handwritten reply below it read:

The man who said this said it well
For such is writ on the Gates of Hell.

Yup, Danny's lost interest in ritual cannibalism and decided that eating
God cookies was going to get him nowhere.

Yup I was right.

I fail to see how you read a serious worldwide decline into those figures.

In Europe there might be a localised secularisation going on, but this isn't
the global picture.

Then you need to realize that the world population grew by over 42% in the
years 1978 to 2000, and catholic population only grew by 38%. You're losing
ground.

It's not just europe. South america used to be almost entirely catholic,
but protestant sects are growing rapidly there. Overall, it's certainly an
optimistic picture. Percentage of catholics worldwide is decreasing.
Diocesan priests worldwide declined nearly 12 and half percent. Nuns
dropped by 19% What's not to like about that? It's even worse if you look
at the median age of priests and nuns. They simply aren't being replaced as
fast as they leave or die. And they are falling way behind per capita. In
1978, there was 1 priest (both diocesan and religious) for every 1800
catholics. In 2000, it is 2500 catholics per priest. Obviously a lot of
these baptized catholics are inactive.

It's one of the reasons that I am so optimistic about the next pope.
Wojtyla stacked the college of cardinals and they are likely to elect
someone just like him. One can only hope that his successor will continue
the fine job of decreasing the percentage of catholics, and continuing the
downward trend of priests. Given their numbers and ages, nuns are already
on the endangered species list. Another 20 years like the last and the only
nuns you see will be stuffed and mounted in a display case in the natural
history museum next to the dodo bird.

Only by a few percentage points. Did the growth in the world's population

occur in Catholic areas (Americas, Europe, parts of Africa) or in
non-Catholic areas (Asia and the Indian subcontinent)?

You should get out your calculator. This drop happened in only 22 years. In
absolute terms, it means something like 70 million missing catholics. That
would pay off a lot of lawsuits. With the worldwide decrease in priests,
the trend will only accelerate.

Both. And considering that the church's only real hope is in the third
world, those stats are particularly interesting in the lack of growth.

I put back the other comments so people can see the bigger pictures.
