Because of the time difference between Washington and Serbia (6
hours), we were able to commemorate the Patriarch in the liturgy

He urged the public to vote for Radovan Karadjic instead of Milosevic
at one point in his career and allowed a huge amount of nationalism to
give reign, something that his reputation could have done much to
stem. He served long, and in the opinion of many, well, and was known
for an irreproachable personal life. Being human, he was not immune
to a few large errors of judgement. But he consistently maintained
focus on religious things, things of the spirit and at leas tried to
stay out of politics.

So was he baptised by water immersion into Jesus' saving name.....AFTER he
came to a knowledge of Christ?

Unfortunately true. :/ He could have done a better job identifying
certain critical human rights issues and opposing evil men. However, I
never got the impression that he was defending evil or deliberately
ignoring evil; his errors were errors of judgment, not failures in faith
or basic decency.

In the former Yugoslavia during the 1990s, any leader that did not
exhibit evil, defend evil, or deliberately ignore evil was something of
an anomaly. I'm grateful for this Patriarch, who was not just an
anomaly but a Christlike anomaly at the center of the local Orthodox
Church.

Lord, have mercy!

I think stumping for Karadjic and supporting some others is more than
a small error in judgement.

One year, as the largest Orthodox cathedral in the world was going up,
I walked around the construction outside the fence of St. Sava in
Beograd. Visible almost everywhere where there wwas a trash can were
many many people going through trash to see if there was something
they could use, eat or sell. The Serbian people have suffered much
from nationalist policies of their leaders and it might take a
generation or two to erase the effects of nationalism on the public
