Bob McD.

The Associated Press has called the Virginia governor's race for Bob
McD., marking the first time a Republican has won election as the
state's top executive in a dozen years. McD., who stepped down this
year as state attorney general to launch a full-time campaign, sailed to
victory with a broad margin. He will begin his four year term January.

The Republican vote didn't increase over 2008. What happened was that

*Democrats* stayed home. (Heck, even I was tempted not to vote.)

And Democrats stayed home precisely because Deeds *ran away* from
Obama, and ran on a Republican platform. (He even said he would "opt
out" of the public health care option.) Therefore, no reason for the
Democratic base to vote for a ConservaDem -- and, as Harry Truman used
to say, if a faux Republican runs against a real Republican, the real
Republican will win every time. Too bad we also last some seats in the
House of Delegates.
