the idea of an eternal place or state of being where all unbeliever's are declared to
terminate in conscience agony and torment for their sins is summed up in the Bible word
" hell, " but a closer look at this doctrine reveals something other than the common
belief of it held by many. the idea of hell being the place of eternal, conscience
torment is a philosophical Greek idea spawned long before the advent of Christ. it is
Platonism.

the wicked do not share in the blessedness of eternal life as the elect do. these are
temporal beings having nothing in common with the elect in this life, nor the one to come.
the idea of a burning hell into which sinners are cast comes from Greek philosopher's and
sustained by the Roman Catholic Church from their added books to the Canon. their early
Church fathers were Platoic's that mingled Greek philosophy with Bible doctrine and
superstition so as to hold Church control over the masses and wrangle money from them to
pay for their sins through fear of being cast into hell...

the word ' hell ' appears 54 times in the KJV of the Bible, and 13 times in the NASB, all
of which are found in the NT.

" The wicked will return to Sheol, Even all the nations who forget God. " Ps. 9:17
( NASB )

" The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God. " Ps. 9:17
( KJV )

in one translation we find the word ' hell ' and in another translation we find the word
' Sheol ' in it's place in the same passage. nonetheless, the Bible word ' Sheol ' is
found in copies of the original God breathed Holy Scriptures, but the translator's of the
KJV rendered the word ' Sheol ' by the word ' hell. ' by the time the KJV was translated
Platonism was wide spread as it is to this day and it crept in to the choice of Bible
words as the translator's rendered words from the original. what then is ' Sheol ' ?

the noun ' Sheol ' is translated ' grave ' some 65 times in the KJV leaving the reader to
confusion as to the exact meaning of what exactly Sheol could be. we turn our attention
to a verse which dispels the idea that Sheol, translated ' hell, ' which many think to be
the place of conscience, agonizing, perpetual torment is anything other than the grave...

" For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see
corruption. " ( Ps. 16:10 KJV )

this verse is speaking of the Lord Jesus Christ who's body was placed in the tomb in which
His body lay for 3 days... hell is the grave. Sheol is the grave. Christ's physical life
was terminated at His physical death. the wages of sin is death; the penalty for the sins
of men is death which Christ endured on behalf of His elect ones. He did not go into a
place of conscience, agonizing, eternal torment to pay for the sins of His elect ones
because the wages of sin is death. and so Christ paid that penalty; death.

" O LORD, thou hast brought up my soul from the grave: thou hast kept me alive, that I
should not go down to the pit. " Ps. 30:3 KJV.

here the word ' grave ' in the KJV is the word ' Sheol. ' note that in this verse the
Psalmist is thanking God for bringing his soul up from Sheol... the soul of unbelieving
man is already dead all the while he is physically alive because he is " dead in sin "
( Eph. 2:1 ) we know that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord and
so the elect are ever present with the Lord immediately upon physical death, while no such
hope is entitled to the unbeliever who's body and soul is not brought up. the unbeliever
is dead forever.

in Ecc. 9:10 we read... " there is no activity or planning or knowledge or wisdom in
Sheol. " countering this verse philosophical thought suggests the wicked are tormented
forever without even the knowledge of why they are there burning in hell... and so too,
the brand new baby dying at birth goes immediately to unconscious, agonizing torment for
all eternity in hell fire at the hand of a loving, merciful, compassionate God not even
knowing why it is there?

this is not the revealed character of God. its more like the revealed character of man to
pervert the character of God supposing God is like unregenerate man. Ps. 50:21

in many OT passages Sheol keeps close company with the word ' death, ' as in Hos. 13:14...
" Shall I ransom them from the power of Sheol? Shall I redeem them from death... ? "
Sheol, hell. death, and the grave are synonym's.

what about " Hades " ? it is found 10 times in the NASB translation and never in the KVJ
where the word " hell " is substituted in its places. Hades is found in Acts 2:27 as
Peter quotes from Ps. 16:10 where the word ' Sheol ' is found. the words Hades, Sheol,
Gehenna and grave are all the same thing... death, cessation of existence.

exactly what eternal destruction is, is summed up in 2 Thes. 2:19... " These will pay the
penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of
His power..." eternal destruction is being cast away from the presence of the Lord. the
living unbeliever does endure some of this now in this life but yet the Lord is still at
large saving His elect. the day will come when He concludes His mercy upon men as the
verse goes on to say.

when an elect one is ' saved ' it is a fair question to ask... " what is he saved from ? "
he is saved from the penalty of his sins, the wages of his sins is death.
( Ro.6:23 ) while the elect one is saved unto many benefits bestowed on him by God there
is only one thing he is ever said to be saved ' from, ' and that one thing is " the wrath
of God " ( Ro. 5:9 ) the penalty of His wrath against sin is death, the cessation of
existence which is God's eternal recompense to the unregenerate sinner for his sins.

the philosophers consistently try to make a case that hell is conscience agony forever and
ever in a place of torment. they cast in aborted fetuses and brand new babies dying at
birth from a parable spoken by Christ of the rich man and Lazarus. without ever studying
the whole Bible they've concluded that from the renderings of the words found in that
parable death is not death but burning hell.

first of all, the human body can not endure fire but for an instant... one's body would
simply be burned back into the elements which make it... a pile of dust would be all that
remains. for one to endure a spiritual fire, such as the Lake of Fire, the unbeliever
would have to be given a resurrected soul just like the believer is given at the instant
of the believer's salvation. the Bible no where teaches such a thing. the unbeliever is
not born again and then onto the Lake of Fire.

we turn to one of the most direct passages dealing with fact that death is the cessation
of life for both body and soul though we should remember that those who are unbeliever's
are already dead in their soul. ( Eph. 2:1 ) Job. 14:13... " "Oh, that You would hide me
in the grave, ( Sheol ) That You would conceal me until Your wrath is past, That You would
appoint me a set time, and remember me! "

if we are to assume there is life beyond death for unbeliever's then we have to assume
that Job is praying that he would leave the sufferings of this life desiring rather to be
tormented forever and ever in the burning torments of hell. in the latter part of this
verse Job is speaking to his hope in the Resurrection of all believer's on the Last Day.

no where does the Bible teach that the unbeliever has eternal life... eternal life is what
you need to live eternally.
