What is a Druid?

Looking at this place of late, I shudder to think.

A Druid is a person who maintains the traditional knowledge of the
people; who teaches how to experience what is happening now in Nature
and who goes beyond science with inquiry into discovery and new truth
to promote and enhance the future. Normally Druids are found within
Celtic cultural contexts as this is where the name-title-office first
gained a strong hold on human awareness.

This is only a partial answer but any Druid who has my respect as such
avoids this venue here like the plague as long as it is being hijacked by
the usual suspects and the people who validate them with their own
willingness to engage in serious dialogue about druidic matters.

A Druid is a person who has got standards...

Hey Preachhole

I prefer you not piggyback on my posts even if it is only by way of
header information. I want nothing to do with your pious evangelist ilk.

the natural and the supernatural, even as a Bard or File does so

Faith or Vate communes between the material and ethereal planes by
meditation, thought, mental observance and conjecture.

What is it to walk between the worlds?
What exists beyond the veil?
What is it to be an intemediary between the natural and super natural?

Wise advice.
I'm sure it's easier not to think, but unfortunately for me, I am
compelled to do so.

To walk between the worlds, and have seen what exists beyond the veil,
and be able to serve as in intermediary between the two is to have
seen, gained knowledge of and understand the eternal; to have
experienced the gods, the Feadh Ree; to have gone inside the Sidhe and
have beheld Siabhra. It is to have journeyed beyond the boundary of
the mortal world and to have crossed over into the otherworld and have
found one's way back again. It is to know the will of the gods and
what they wish from us.

Not in my Book of Ogham but I'd be interested in knowing whose
Briatharogam you are using.

I associate the tales of the wren with Gort (Fairy-Wren of Manxland).
Gort is all about "feast or famine" and I associate its mastery with
knowledge. However Idad also has tales that could match up with the
wren's understandings (The Fairy Palace of the Yew Trees) where
understanding is said to be achieved through suffering. The wren can
fly higher than any bird, launching from the back of an eagle (this
reminds me of Newton's comments about achieving knowledge on teh
shoulders of giants), yet it is hunted and killed on St. Stephen's
Day. A wren can also can be associated through The Story of Blodeuwedd
with Duir (through the eagle and Lugh's naming) but I don't see a
direct reference to it in the Briatharogam themselves.

I hope to learn something on this as every bit of knowledge helps.

Searles O'Dubhain

The Auraicept na N-Éces has "wren" in the second aicme, second few
position. In tree ogham, that position in the fews (number 7) is Duir,
to the best of my knowledge. A quick reference webpage for this would
be http://www.maryjones.us/ctexts/ogham.html

So, to "understand the song of the wren" would be to "understand
druidheacht" if one would want to toss the art ogham in there as well
(just don't think "wizardry" is the right term there, though)

Well, one of mine certainly states "You shall not engage in polite
conversation with proven frauds, obvious exploiters and race-baiters"
but then again... I don't call myself Druid so don't take my word for it.
