Long exposures can allow you to see things in the dark you might not
initially notice...

For the first one, did you mean lighting or lightning?

"Lighning." The skyglow visible is nice and all on cloudy nights
(though it sucks on cloudless nights when I try to photograph the
stars), but it's the lightning that makes things more interesting.

on a dark night you could see a similar glow on the horizon which was the
light pollution of the Phoenix metropolitan area, about 80 crow miles away.
Casa Grande might have contributed a little too.
