Wow. British journalism continues to get it wrong, again and again.
"Nasa are planning to retire the 30-year-old space shuttle fleet next
year."

Who are this "Nasa?"

So... "not that well," would be the answer, it would seem.

Britain had itself a kick-ass launch vehicle, many years ago, the
Black Knight. Amazing little vehicle, the smallest vehicle to ever put
a satellite into orbit. Lots of promise. Then it got pissed away on
the altar of politics.

Which is NASA's route.

Indeed it is. Britain just capitulated fifty or sixty years before the
US. *That* is why I often bring up lunacy out of Britain in my
blogscreeds; the insane nonsense you Brits inflict upon yourselves
tends to creep over the pond and infec tthe nannystaters *here.*

BTW, do you ever write about L.A.S.E.Rs?

Are those distinct from"lasers?" Or is that some special notation used
in the Uk, perhaps designating some weapons or targetting system
carried by aircraft of the Raf?

Exactly. This planet.

That still doesn't tell me who this "Nasa" is of which I see constant
mention in the British press. You'd think the Bbc might be more
explicit, but, nope.

And for the same reasons - "not enough money".

Hodwash. Take the money y'all are spending on the millions who were
unemployed for a decade (http://up-ship.com/blog/?p=3155), and Britain
could rule the spacewaves in no time. Spaceflight need not be as
expensive as NASA has made it seem. Look to Musk and Rutan. Britain
*used* to have a worthy aerospace industry. it coudl again, if it
decided to reverse its downward trend. This is something I'd liek to
see.

LASER and NASA are both acronyms.

"NASA" is an acronym. But what is this "Nasa" all y'all Brits keep
yammering on about? And nobody refers to lasers as L.A.S.E.R.s.
"Laser" is now its own word.

No, it is not. It is the official name of an organization. Unlike a
"laser" there really is only the one NASA. It's not a generic term for
a common item; it refers toa specific thing. Like, say, the Uk or the
Raf.

Not in my lifetime. Where have I seen it called anything but NASA?
Only in the British press.
