What is interesting is the south is overwhelming Baptist, a branch that
sprung from the Puritan rejection of the Church of England and may reflect
the roots of the people in Britain.

The areas that were settled by immigrants from places other than the UK tend
to be Catholic, followed by Lutheran, or a garden salad of competing
Protestant sects. Those area also tend to be much less gung-ho about
religion. That's not to say the people aren't devout in their faiths, but
they don't tend to brew up that theocratic, America is God's Chosen, burn
the sinners and wait for the rapture toxic beverage they are fond of in the
south.
