I was going to post something yesterday about this, but
I thought I must have somehow have gotten the thousand-a-month
price tag for insurance wrong.
I want to state first of all that I am in favor of socialized
medicine. Most countries have it, and it works for them.
We need to ask ourselves why the US is the only industrialized nation
not to have it. Perhaps there are reasons that run deeper
than "we never tried."
Several states have tried it notably California and Massachussets. The
problem is funding. The federal
government siphons off tax dollars on crackpot wars and international
grandstanding that inflate the egos of our leaders but do
nothing at all for the people. Then they blame the states
for being poor. It is not the states that have failed us,
but the federal government. The first step to solving this
problem is for our leaders in Washington to confess that they
have lied to us and failed us.
I am in my sixties, and I have not spent fifteen thousand
dollars my entire life on medical care. Fifteen thousand is more than
I spend on housing or food or anything else in a year.
No, I am not blessed with good health. I have allergies.
In my family we die from allergies. Oh, the doctors always say it
is an infection, but medicines and hospital food are deadly.
We are European. We do not die from infectious diseases.
We die from bad food and bad medicine.
American doctors are quacks. It is not the federal government
or even the states who allow a man to hang up a shingle as
a doctor, but the individual counties. In many counties medical
practice is a political favor that can be obtained for the
right kind of political support. Doctors cannot tell the difference
between allergies and a reaction to an infection. In fact there is no
difference. Strengthening the immune system against infections
also causes allergies.
Doctors never get this message. There is no divine intelligence
in our bodies that distinguishes between "good" and "bad" microbes or
"self" and "not self". Ever since the discovery of DNA the
information about how the immune system works has been available. It
is really very simple and it is not right even to call it an "immune
system". It is just a code like a computer code. Four hundred
megabytes of programming for the biological synthesis machine that is
our bodies.
What was America's reaction of the discovery of the DNA mechanism of
evolution? I had the good fortune to have a teacher who was a personal friend of Dr. Crick who shared the 1952 Nobel
prize for the discovery of DNA. In 1962 I was attacked by
the Navy for learning evolution in a public school in Los
Angeles. They sent agents into our home. They interrogated
and drugged all of us. They shut down the publisher of the
textbook. Within a few years the Advanced Placement biology
class could no longer be taught.
They tried to say evolution was unconstitutional and
antisemitic. Since our teacher was Jewish, it had to be
my fault for taking the class. There was to be no more education for
me. I was ordered to drop out
of school and join the Navy. I ignored this order on the
ground that my federal tormentor had no legitimate authority
to give it.
Later I was drafted, and I found myself in an Army hospital
being treated for battle fatigue. The modern term for this
is post traumatic stress disorder. I never was in combat.
The trauma came from the training and drugs the Army gave me.
Their treatment for it was more of the same debilitating drugs.
The Army wanted fighting men, and they did not want to pay for
them. That is why we had the draft. They did not want to pay
medical care either, so they drafted doctors too. Now that they
do not have the draft, the Army has their own medicals schools
where they turn out doctors who will never refuse to practice
Army style unethical medicine. Until they snap.
To come back to the point, much of American medicine is military
medicine. Patch us up and keep them going until we retire at age
thirty-six. All the goals are short term.
Most doctors are quacks,
but all Army doctors are quacks. After the military has
trained them, they go out and practice on civilians.
I do not want this kind of medicine. For what Americans pay
for health care we should live two hundred years. Illness
does not strike people at random.
We suffer far more than we know from lifestyle decisions, bad food, bad
water, and iatrogenic illnesses. Under our fee-for-service
system, it is in nobody's economic interest to research
and publicize these problems. When the federal government
begins to pay for medical care, I think there may be more
money to research these other factors. That is why I favor
socialized medicine in principle.
In practice we should be careful about pouring more money
into a broken health care system. Reform of medical care
delivery must go hand in hand with public funding. We need to
get the hypochondriacs, creationists, the placebo effect (faith)
healers, and the psychiatrists out of medicine.
This cannot happen overnight. We probably should postpone
this bill for the next session of congress. It might be
better to phase this in over five or ten years than to rush
things. |
