I just returned home after traveling through Europe for three weeks,
and all I can say is that America looks retarded in comparison to the
rest of the world.
Europeans certainly do have their own flaws, but it was an amazing
experience to travel across national borders - all the way into former
communist territory - without having to show my passport. U.S.
Customs looked like a police state by comparison.
The formerly communist countries of Hungary and Serbia looked more
civilized than many parts of the USA, and as I flew over Chicago it
looked more decayed than the socialist-era concrete apartment blocs of
Belgrade.
And for some reason Europeans manage to stay thin, despite a diet rich
in meat, alcohol, and lots of tobacco. I think it is because of
public transportation, that they wind up walking a lot more than
Americans. Earlier today I drove myself to Wal-Mart to see fat
Americans waddling down the aisles like penguins, filling their
shopping carts with bags of snacky cakes and cheezy-poofs - a stark
contrast to the vibrant farmers' markets in Europe.
European politics are similar to American - divided between leftist
socialists and rightist nationalists - but somehow they wind up being
more effective than ours. Walls are especially symbolic since they
remind Europeans of Communist oppression, and as I was leaving they
were constructing a "Belgrade Wall" made of cardboard bricks, which is
to be torn down on November 9th to celebrate the 20th anniversary of
the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Unfortunately, the symbolism of
walls is lost on us Americans, who are currently building our own
walls along our own borders.

He's talking about now, not then. I think he's trying to point out
that the US is becoming more authoritarian while Europe is becoming
less authoritarian.
I'm not entirely in agreement that this is true. Some think Europe is
evolving into a more centralized government. Brick walls are down but
centralized legal walls are growing.
European country national debts are even bigger than ours. Once the US
can not longer afford to police the world for them I suspect the EU
will start to have more competing than cooperating interests. Some of
this is already evident with the GM bailout squabbles and the European
bank bailouts. European countries have more of a welfare state to
support and drag them down. Perhaps its paranoia, but I'm even
starting to suspect G20 cooperation in the financial mess was
predicated on US adopting a more European health care system to make
the playing field more even. |

A wall is a wall is a wall, bubbles. Doesn't matter if you are building
it to keep people in or out, it's still nothing more than an expression

The Pentium chip was made in Taiwan, and Firefox is an international

The current issue of the Economist reports the US fed+state debt for 2010
will be 100% of GDP. Few western governments (Japan/Italy) are higher.
