It's already been noted that many of our technological

advances, come from gov't funded research, advancing the
"cutting edge of knowledge" long before any application for
the information is known. People laugh when they hear that
the gov't has funded a study of something so trivial seeming
as, perhaps the sex life of frogs, what they don't see is
that it is just such, seemingly trivial studies, that are
often the precursor to break throughs of significanse.
