"Afghanistan and Who Would Be King":

"Afghanistan is a notorious trap for intruders bearing a False Model. The
English and the Russians know this all too well. An American became Prince of
Ghor but retired to Pennsylvania. This inspired Rudyard Kipling who sent his
Man Who Would Be King to Afghanistan—his head to be returned in a sack. From
Afghanistan a British army of 4,500 troops and 12,000 civilians retreated in
January of 1842 with the only one British survivor, Dr. William Brydon. The
British eventually gave up that part of their empire—preferring to keep their
heads.
"A British map-maker drew a line on the map, called the "Durand Line" and the
British Empire abandoned the area beyond the line. In 1979 the U.S.S.R. invaded
Afghanistan. In 1989 they withdrew—head in a sack—and the U.S.S.R. collapsed
soon after. Osama bin Laden and his al Queda organized there and killed 3,000
Americans in New York in 2001. Osama bin Laden is still hiding somewhere along
the Durand line in 2008. America did not chase bin Laden into that
territory—they invaded Iraq instead, an easier target. But American soldiers
continue to fight in Afghanistan—and their head sometimes returns in a sack—a
body bag.

'When has any outside power ever tamed Afghanistan?'

Leslie Gelb, President Emeritus, Council on Foreign Relations, speaking to
Charlie Rose March 19, 2008 "
