REPUBLICANS! -- MASTERS of Doublethink !!

No Republicans, Doublethink is not Rush Limbaugh thinking
when he doesn't have half his brain tied behind his back.

Republican leadership, Limbaugh and Cheney, are counting on the
fact that their Doublethinking (see Orwell) dittoheads don't
notice that now they are arguing that government is actually
working so well that any competition from it will bankrupt
private HMOs.

By the late 1970s memories of successful government programs
from the 1930s to 1950s were fading, so Reagan's apocryphal and
made-up stories of the Cadillac-driving welfare mother were able
to gain traction. But if health care reform passes and works,
people will realize that the "government doesn't work" line is
BS. Since it's Conservatism before America, they are hysterical.

========== Doublethink - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Doublethink is a word described in the fictional language of
Newspeak and the act of simultaneously accepting as correct two
mutually contradictory beliefs. It is related to, but distinct
from, hypocrisy and neutrality.
Doublethink is an integral concept of George Orwell's dystopian
novel Nineteen Eighty-Four.

According to the novel, doublethink is:
“The power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind
simultaneously, and accepting both of them....To tell deliberate
lies while genuinely believing in them, to forget any fact that
has become inconvenient, and then, when it becomes necessary
again, to draw it back from oblivion for just so long as it is
needed, to deny the existence of objective reality and all the
while to take account of the reality which one denies — all this
is indispensably necessary.

"Even in using the word "doublethink," it is necessary to
exercise doublethink."

"For by using the word one admits that one is tampering with
reality; by a fresh act of doublethink one erases this knowledge;
and so on indefinitely, with the lie always one leap ahead of the
truth.[1]...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doublethink -

Sound familiar!? (laughing!)

========== COMMON EXAMPLES OF Republican doublethink:

Like: "We support the troops, send more off to die!"
Like: "We hate the elite limosine wine-sippers, cut their taxes!"
Like: "We hate Big Government, give them more guns and powers!"
Like: "We believe in inalienable Rights! Legalize torture!"

The list is endless.

I disagree with the premise that Republicans are masters of
"doublethink." Orwell described it as the acceptance of two opposing
and irreconcilable beliefs at the same time. That's not that
unusual. People often just don't associate the two positions in their
minds and seem comfortable expressing both, only at different times.
Killing people, for example, is wrong but killing people with remote
controlled predator missiles is perfectly alright because its
necessary. Bigotry is wrong except where Muslims are concerned. In
other words, perfectly honest people can and do exercise doublethink
almost every day.

What the Republicans are masters of is "doubletalk." That's the
ability to use language that deliberately disguises or distorts the
actual meaning. For example, a law that allows the government to pry
into the private affairs of private citizens is called "The Patriot
Act." An all-out military invasion of an unthreatening nation is
called a "pre-emptive strike." Reducing an ancient nation to rubble
is called "nation building." Torture is called "enhanced
interrogation." Examples of Republican doubletalk can fill a large
book.

Unlike doublethink, only the most dishonest and depraved engage in
doubletalk--and that's an accurate description of what's left of
Republican Party. Just listen to the Republican rantings against
healthcare reform. Only the most mentally challenged can fail to see
that the Republicans, to a man, are doing all they can to protect the
profane profits of the private insurance industry. But from their
language, they try to cover it with claims of fiscal responsibility
(after eight years of waste and corruption and TARP), of opposition to
big government (after eight years of calling up the reserves and
invading two, count 'em, foreign nations), and protection of
individual liberty (after the patriot act, Guantanamo, warrentless
arrests, torture of prisoners, etc.). That's double talk, the language
of George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Hank Paulson, and all the rest of
remnants of the Republican Party.

Socialism is the government owning the corporations who rob the people
while paying them to be poor.

Fascism is the government and corporations forcing the people to work for
free. And your still poor if youre still alive.

Of course, not being a mind reader I can never
prove any of this. All I can do is provide evidence.
Poll America, and we find no bigots. So self-image or
self-description means little.

It could for example be Hypocrisy: "the act of pretending to have
beliefs, opinions, virtues, feelings, qualities, or standards
that one does not actually have." I could prove that if one
truly hated Big Government, in fact espoused that as a *major*
value or pet peeve, one could NOT give them more guns and powers.
(Barring obvious but uncommon exceptions.)

And abouve, I am talking about things espoused that as *major*
values or pet peeves, not just idle chit-chat items.

It could be just sloppy thinking, but then it should have
no partisan basis.

It could be exceptions to the rule as snakehawk implies,
yet the opposites are not "oh-by-the-way," exceptions,
they are BOTH *major* values or pet peeves.
No, "exceptions" doesn't seem to work.
But perhaps I err in denying that the extreme sloppy thinking
that that would require, is that common. But I do.

Quote:

No, it's just that Republicans are the masters at it.

Again, typical "exceptions to rule" ain't what I'm talking about.
Besides, "Bigotry is wrong," none of your examples, are major
Repub talking points. They are more at a chit-chat level.

Yes, and since one can measure if the "Blue Skies Inititiative"
causes pollution, easier to quantify.

I just don't understand your bifurcated position that
your claims and mine are mutually exclusive.

The founding fathers of Conservativism openly admitted
they favored lying to the unclean masses whom they
distrusted and needed to control:
Edmund Burke (1729-1797)
Leo Strauss (1899 – 1973)
Russell Kirk (1918 – 1994)

Laugh. Their rulers use doubletalk, their victims, ...
uhm... I mean constituents and talk show audiences, use
doublethink to wash it down with.

But yes, there is plenty of sloppy thinking and
mindless rah-rah cheering and herdism to go around too.
