Mr. Hoffman spoke to a deflated crowd of about 50 in a hotel ballroom here soon
after midnight on Wednesday and said he had called Mr. Owens to concede.

The district has been a Republican stronghold for generations, and the party has
represented parts of it since the 19th century.

The battle became one of the most closely followed races in the nation, drawing
in some of the biggest forces in politics in both parties. Republicans who
viewed the race as a test of the party’s most deeply held conservative
principles — including Sarah Palin, the former governor of Alaska; Gov. Tim
Pawlenty of Minnesota, a presidential hopeful; and grass-roots groups that have
forcefully opposed Democratic economic and health care policies — rallied behind
Mr. Hoffman.
]

They had held that district since the 1800s ....

The election in the New York 23rd Congressional district didn't make
national headlines until Hoffman entered the race because he felt
Scozzafava did not represent the Republican Party. The truth is
Scozzafava was not a good representative for Republican Party. Her
candidacy flew under the radar becuase she was chosen by a local GOP
committee. The race might have been different if they had they luxury
of a primary. Hoffman wasn't heard of until Fred and Jeri Thompson
made it an issue on their radio show. Hoffman entered the race too
late and Scozzafava left the race too late. On election day,
Scozzafava was still on the ballot which in effect made her a spoiler.
Hoffman trailed the Democrat by only a couple of percentage points. If
Scozzafava wasn't in the race, Hoffman would have probably won. So it
was no big defeat for the Republicans.

The held the seat since the Civil War. Of course it's a huge defeat
for the republicans. That seat also was the last republican in
Congress from New England.

The bigger loses were in New Jersey and Virginia where the main issues
were the economy and unemployment.

Those issues are LOCAL issues. It meant nothing to the rest of the
nation.

If anything, the election was about Dummycratic leadership. It was an
"It's the economy, Stupid" moment.

Governors are the CEOs of their state. They were fired by the
stockholders. Deeds and Corzine were given their walking papers.

Obama and the liberals have another vote in Congress. Now spin that up

He's also wrong to assume Scozzafava's couple of percents would have
gone to Hoffman. Those people didn't want Hoffman. While some might
have gone to him, some would also hae gone to Owens.

He also overlooks that this had been a solid RED seat since the
friggin' Civil War and that only last year, the GOP congressman won
with 65 percent of the vote, nearly two to one.

It's quite a swing back to the Dems where it counts, in Washington.

Man, nice spin. In a day of Democrat disasters, you go toilet bowl
fishing and come up with one race that came out about the way people
predicted. Somehow that makes all the D losses of no matter at all.

Amazin'

This was a federal office, not a local one.
Obama is hardly likely to run for mayor ...

Nor would he be likely to win.

And no neocon could get elected as dogcatcher.

Agreed. NeoCons are thoroughly dead and whipped. For now. But they
do keep popping up in history.

But the Dems will be taking on Republicans ranging from conservative,
through moderate, to right down liberal. And they will be taking on
strengthened Conservative and Libertarian party candidates too. I
wouldn't be so quick to count the Dem chickens in that battle.

One could dispose of all the rethugs & still have plenty of conservatives
in the demoratic party alone.
At least we would get debate & argument.

"Conservative Loses Upstate House Race in Blow to Right "

Which right is that? The right that supported the Democrat or the
right that ran against him?

One could dispose of all the rethugs & still have plenty of
conservatives
in the demoratic party alone.
At least we would get debate & argument.

Dispose? And how would you do that?

Raffle hunting licences- bag limit of 3 social conservatives per
license. After a couple of seasons, the Republican party might once
again be more interested in economic policy than forcing their brand of
morality down everyones' throats.

"Conservative Loses Upstate House Race in Blow to Right "
[
Mr. Hoffman spoke to a deflated crowd of about 50 in a hotel ballroom here soon
after midnight on Wednesday and said he had called Mr. Owens to concede.
]
[
The district has been a Republican stronghold for generations, and the party has
represented parts of it since the 19th century.

The battle became one of the most closely followed races in the nation, drawing
in some of the biggest forces in politics in both parties. Republicans who
viewed the race as a test of the party’s most deeply held conservative
principles — including Sarah Palin, the former governor of Alaska; Gov. Tim
Pawlenty of Minnesota, a presidential hopeful; and grass-roots groups that have
forcefully opposed Democratic economic and health care policies — rallied behind
Mr. Hoffman.
]

They had held that district since the 1800s ....

The election in the New York 23rd Congressional district didn't make
national headlines until Hoffman entered the race because he felt
Scozzafava did not represent the Republican Party. The truth is
Scozzafava was not a good representative for Republican Party. Her
candidacy flew under the radar becuase she was chosen by a local GOP
committee.

So, if you are a rethug you must NOT be chosen by the folks in
the area to be represented, right?
Instead Rush, Palin & a rich guy in Arkansas must choose
who will be marching to THEIR flag & taking their orders.

Quote:
The race might have been different if they had they luxury
of a primary. Hoffman wasn't heard of until Fred and Jeri Thompson
made it an issue on their radio show.

Top-down buffonery, right?
Is that like trickle-down?

Down whose leg, exactly?

Quote:
Hoffman entered the race too
late

And winger stupidity is whose fault?

Quote:
and Scozzafava left the race too late. On election day,
Scozzafava was still on the ballot which in effect made her a spoiler.
Hoffman trailed the Democrat by only a couple of percentage points. If
Scozzafava wasn't in the race, Hoffman would have probably won. So it
was no big defeat for the Republicans.

CLUE: Scozzafava was the republican.

Quote:
The bigger loses were in New Jersey and Virginia where the main issues
were the economy and unemployment.
