An international virtual circle for self-education is to be created.

Program: history of the international communist movement, the
international left, the socialist movement today. Other topics
proposed by participants will be discussed.

How is this different from "newsgroups"? In one way important way:
there is to be no "white noise". Look at the existing newsgroups, like
alt.politics.communism or alt.politics.socialism or
alt.politics.socialism.trotsky.

1) They are full topics totally irrelevant or simply opposite in
meaning to what the conferences proclaim as their title. E.g. on
November 2, 2009 we get an article with this title: "Multiculturalism
Lays Seeds For Future Conflict". This is obviously a racist article.

2) Topics relevant to history and the present day of the revolutionary
movement are absent. Instead, we read petty personal attacks upon
individuals living in the North America, Australia, etc. There are no
people, participants from semi-colonial countries, or Third World
countries.

Hence, there is a need for a new self-education international group
for socialists, communists, revolutionaries.

The format for such a circle is open. But it definitely should not be
a newsgroup controlled by Yahoo, or a similar server. One possible
format which we seem to successfully implement here, in the former
USSR, is a left Internet-radio. The regular broadcasts, with a
possibility of real-time discussion about the program, would be a
modern equivalent of a session of a study group. During such a
podcast, different people can prepare presentations on different
relevant topics. A "DJ" collects these presentations (in MP3 format)
and broadcasts them.

Why should "noise" matter unless it obscures the relevant? Posters are
too few for us to be concerned about "noise." Dearth of intelligence,
not excess of idiocy, is the main problem. Nobody knows what to do in
today's crisis—

How does one avoid racist postings and petty squabbles? Only through
one form or another of censorship, or if you prefer, "moderation."
However, in the current state of the left, who could be trusted to be
the moderator? Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

The most popular solution to this problem is the blog. It fits
capitalist free market principles beautifully, as whoever pays the
Internet provider for the the bandwith gets to be the censor.

The idea of a "left internet radio" does not in the least solve this
problem. If it existed, how would one prevent racists and fascists and
other troublemakers from broadcasting? Only through some form of
censorship.

And it has the additional obvious problem of time zones. Even within
the former USSR, I would imagine it would be difficult for such an
Internet study group to function if some participants lived in Odessa
and others in Vladivostok.

The blogger gets to play censor, but who will be the blogger's
playmates? Using blogs as discussion forums is in sharp decline, and
they don't solve the censorship problem for left discussion. Does the
censor become trustworthy by owning a blog?

Those who have money are considered more trustworthy in capitalist
society than those who do not. (And yes, for the irony-impaired, I am
being ironical.)

The latest things are Facebook, Twitter and Youtube. Twitter is great
for people with very short attention spans, Youtube is truly excellent
for the partially illiterate, and to be fair, quite useful for the
rest of us too. But neither is suitable for discussion groups.

I haven't checked out Facebook, but it seems by reputation to be all
personal-social, I don't think a socialist discussion group on
Facebook would fly. And of course you still have the "moderation"
problem.

There are no technical solutions to the moderation/censorship issue,
it is a political issue not a technical one.

One consequence of the revival of mass radical movements would be
Internet discussion groups worth participating in. The cart,
unfortunately, cannot be put before the horse.
