THEY haven't a clue what to do about crime. The Lord Chief
Injustice, Lord Woolf, seems to have had a brainstorm and, after
decades of liberalism, is suddenly demanding long sentences for
mobile-phone thieves.

This would be a good idea if the police were allowed to go out
and catch them, but they are far too busy being trained in race
awareness and gender sensitivity, and so cannot be spared for
foot patrols.

Even as Lord Woolf suggests a plan which would require dozens of
new jails, the Chief Inspector of Prisons, Anne Owers, snivels
that we are not treating convicts with enough respect.

The warders of Dartmoor have apparently dared to be rude to the
robbers, killers, drug-dealers and other choice types under
their care.

Both these confused characters come from the same dangerous
group that has spent the past 40 years ripping the guts and
bones out of the criminal justice system. The only difference is
that Lord Woolf has begun to notice his ideas are not working,
while Ms Owers either doesn't know or doesn't care.

As they flounder about, reality rams into our lives.

I am constantly sent local newspapers full of the most horrid
crimes - rapes of 92-year-old women, merciless robberies of
pensioners in their homes, muggings and murders - which are now
too commonplace to make the national Press at all.

A wise government which cared about the people would draw
conclusions from all this.

It would put police back on the streets, not the Toytown
substitutes proposed by the Interior Minister, David Blunkett.

It would realise that the undermining of traditional morality
has gone too far, while in fact it continues with its reckless
destruction of the married family. It would tell Ms Owers that
prisons are for punishment and ought not to have in-cell TVs or
'relaxation music' lilting through their corridors.

If people don't like prison, they should not have asked to go
there by attacking or robbing their neighbours, or selling drugs
to them.

And when they do go there, they should dislike it so much that
they never want to go back again. That should get the prison
population down.

But we do not have a wise government. Our present rulers believe
that what they call poverty is an excuse for crime.

And they think they can cure poverty. They will end by failing
to cure poverty or crime, creating a grim and dingy society
which can be kept under control only by desperate, violent
repression.

This is what socialists always do. The most sordid prisons and
the most brutal penal systems are to be found in socialist
countries like Vietnam, China and Cuba.

THE Tony Benn roadshow is packing theatres across the country.

But the very things audiences like about him, his old-fashioned
educated charm and oratory, his gentle humour, his lovely
aristocratic manners and reassuring BBC Home Service voice, are
the very things his socialism has done so much to destroy. He
has made sure that there will never be another Tony Benn.

SOME of you may wonder how I can be so tender about the
prisoners of Guantanamo and so lacking in sympathy for the
prisoners of Dartmoor. The answer is simple. The ones in
Dartmoor have been convicted by juries.

Leave men's work to the men, ladies

IF MY house catches fire, I hope I am not rescued by a 5ft 1in
fireman who is too short to lift a ladder. I do not want to be
lugged through the smoke and flames by someone who is too weak
to bear my unconscious 12st form.

Actually, I doubt very much whether there are any firemen
anywhere in Britain who are this short or this weak. But there
may soon be firewomen who are, because of our society's sexist
anti-male bias.

I do not think a man could have brought the case which Katie
Reid took to an employment tribunal last week, claiming sex
discrimination by the East Sussex Fire Brigade.

Ms Reid was embarrassed because she had to stand on a stepladder
to clean the fire engine. She could not pull out hoses or lift
ladders. She could not reach the emergency keys in a lift.

If she had won her case, they would have had to build a special
engine to suit her needs, at a cost of £140,000.

It is easy to understand why she was upset to be told she was
too small for the job, but I cannot see that it was the fire
brigade's fault. She reached a private settlement - but in
today's climate, how long will it be before someone else wins
such a case?

Fire brigades all over the country are weakened by being forced
to pretend women can fight fires as well as men, when it is
obvious most of them cannot.

Like so much of the sexual revolution, this is an attempt to
change human nature.

Very few women want to be firefighters, engine drivers,
trawlerpersons or coalminers. Why should they?

So why should the world be altered so that they can be?

Because man's role as breadwinner, father and head of the family
is under attack as never before.

Very cool Kate, now ask Tony if he fancies a puff

PICTURED on a night out with a cigarette in her mouth, Kate Moss
undoes years of antismoking propaganda.

If they really want to stamp it out, the authorities should pay
lots of utterly uncool celebrities to smoke in public. Tony
Blair and Barry Manilow would be a good start, joined perhaps by
Robin Cook, William Hague and John Major.

Only the single jab can defuse this measles time bomb

ALMOST exactly a year ago I wrote in The Mail on Sunday: 'If
there is a measles epidemic in this country, the rigid minds of
the Health Department will have to share the blame for it.' I
warned that many parents mistrusted the MMR triple jab and I
said it was folly to deny them the option of a single measles
injection. Since then the authorities have retained their
utterly inflexible stance.

In spite of the latest unconfirmed leak we still do not actually
know for sure if the Prime Minister has allowed his son Leo to
be given the MMR jab.

Now we have a measles outbreak in South London.

It is time for the NHS to give the single vaccination again -
and urgently.

GERMANY has now ceased to be an independent country. Its
political leaders have been advised that, in the coming
election, they must not make promises which might break European
Union economic rules. The Berlin government has been officially
warned that if it does not get its deficit down, it will face a
heavy EU fine. This is what happens if you join the euro.

I just cannot see why any Labour voter should want this to
happen to Britain.
