Nonsense, the nominations closed a few days after his inauguration.
It was probably sent off before he was inaugurated.
So he got the Peace Prize for doing what, applying for a Job without killing anyone ? |

They didn't cut you out, Robert - well not entirely anyway. You come on
just after 10 minutes into the programme.
It is clear, though, from your comments, and what is actually broadcast
on iplayer, that they have severely edited your contribution. But what
do you expect from the BBC - honesty and free speech!
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/b00n2vv7
"Risen without any talent or achievement" was Robert's description of
Obama. I greatly admire the American lady, Bonny, for keeping her cool
despite Robert's ignorance and stupidity. I don't think he deserved a
second more of airtime, and I find it surprising that he should bring
this rather humiliating exchange to our attention.
The Nobel citation is at
http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace/laureates/2009/press.html
It makes good sense, unless you measure contribution towards peace only
in terms of how many troops are withdrawn from a conflict.
Or you measure it on the basis of something actually achieved!
Perhaps you could tell us precisely what he has actually achieved -
particularly in the *preceding* year?
All we've heard so far is rhetoric and platitudes. If that is to be the
criteria, then every politician in the world should get a prize!
The citation made it pretty clear that he was given the award on the basis
of his "vision" which must presumably include all the policy statements he
has made.
It makes more sense than giving the peace prize to Kissinger, shortly after
he had increased the ferocity of the bombing in Vietnam. |

ALL Western politicians espouse peace, claim a vision. How many walk round
ranting they want to bomb the world? Give it to Nick Clegg, he won't do anything. |

I don't see why it should be an absurd *concept*, just one hard to
realise in practice due to the lack of suitable candidates.
Perhaps the Nobel committee should leave it uncollected for a few
years, to make the point. If they 'rolled over' the money there might
even be a bit of incentive to politicians lol. |

There is, in truth, no way of measuring one person's contribution to peace
against another person's.
There are plenty of people who give speeches about peace. Bruce Kent, George
Galloway, any number of people who are involved in pressure groups aimed at
getting troops out or achieving disarmament. And it would be pointless to
give awards for that sort of campaigning. Anyone can do it. Ban the Bomb.
Hold marches, make speeches, print leaflets.
There are a very few people who have the power to influence world peace, and
they are at the very top. Presidents, prime ministers, foreign secretaries.
Very few to choose from because in the UK our leader and his cabinet members
are all warmongers, every last one of them. They are in favour of bombing
and shelling our enemies rather than negotiating, providing we are strong
enough to win.
Obama is the only world leader to repudiate that strategy, so either he
deserves the prize or nobody does. Ever. It would have to be abolished.
Instead, you could award the Nobel Prize for Fuckwit Warmongering, and there
would be plenty of worthy candidates for that sort of award. |

Obviously you think it is harmful enough to be worth bothering
about. I'm not convinced it is. FWIW, I thought it an odd choice
of the Nobel committee because I had assumed the prize is awarded
for deeds done. Apparently that is not the case. That doesn't
disturb me unduly though - "it's just a game" after all. If it
encourages Obama to stick to his promises then I will be pleased.
However, I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out he was unable
to do so.
