Republicans are hammering some of Rep. Charlie Rangel's
Democratic colleagues in the wake of recent stories surrounding
Rangel's significant underreporting of assets, among them
freshman Rep. Michael McMahon of New York.

The GOP is demanding that McMahon return $15,000 in campaign
donations from the embattled chairman; a spokesperson for the
first-term congressman from Staten Island told the New York Post
that he has no intention of returning the money to Rangel.

Since freshmen members are what biologists would call an
"indicator species" of the congressional ecosystem, McMahon's
initial reaction suggests that the toxicity level of the Rangel
issue is, at the moment, still tolerable.

Because McMahon holds a Republican-friendly seat--the only New
York City district that voted for John McCain and one of only
three in the state that voted for the GOP presidential nominee.
Unlike with his other NYC colleagues in the House, when the Post
headlines a story, "Pol's Charlie Hor$e: Heat on SI Rep. to
Return Elex Funds", it hurts. And this isn't the first time
Rangel has surfaced as an issue for McMahon.

But in declining to return Rangel's money at the first sign of
political heat, McMahon has signaled that the benefits of
maintaining a relationship with Rangel still outweigh the
drawbacks. After all, when you are one of the most junior
members of a state delegation, you don't want to throw the most
senior member under the bus until it's absolutely necessary--
particularly when that senior member is the powerful Ways and
Means Committee chairman.
