This was posted on the forum after Leonard played it in Chicago. I
don't know if anyone else will respond to it like I have. I'd like to
try to say something about why I like this song so much.

Do you remember what I wrote after seeing Leonard? About how it seems
to me that he has come much, much closer to being at home in the
world? In this song, he sings, 'It's like they tore away my blindfold
and they said we're gonna let this prisoner live.' And, 'I got the
same old broken heart but now it feels like it belongs to someone
else.' I'm in love with, attached to, absolutely require the broken
heart. When he sings, 'There is a crack in everything, that's how the
light gets in,' I hear that the heart, primarily, is broken.

It concerned me when I heard Leonard talking about how his time on the
mountain unburdened him of some of his lifelong despair because I
thought it was that despair I was in love with. I thought, I don't
know if I can get behind this more well-adjusted Leonard. But the
change in him parallels a change in me; I received healing, too, not
so long ago. While serious will always be one of my dominant styles,
playfulness has become another. There's a difference between
encountering the world with a broken heart and encountering the world
with a heart broken open. He's been let off the hook, the
restlessness eased.

There's more in the song the speculate upon, and I hope you will with
me. When I heard it, I fell in love with Leonard all over again, and
so I thought of a poem Agnieska posted to the newsgroup years ago. I
posted it in the forum for everyone who wasn't lucky enough to have
read it then, but I think I'll bring it out again here too.

O Leonard Cohen
I red your shattered poems at 2 a.m.
In the tired pages
I write love notes in pencil
to the you in 1972.

With ripped hall passes
and German candy wrappers
I bookmark the poems that hit me.
When the book is all bookmarks
I shake them out
and put in new ones.

You are only print
and scratchy bootleg tapes
You have me like you said you would
in 1972
I am the unborn woman
17 in 1997
in love with you.

Good question. If I recall correctly, Leonard mentioned this poem to
me and really liked it.

She seems to have faded away a long time ago now.

He played the song with no fanfare or introduction. He did seem to have a
wry little smile for Roscoe after he finished the song. I think he felt very
satisfied with it.

It was quite thrill to be hearing it's maiden voyage to the public. But
then -- seeing him with the band is quite a thrill in itself.

There are rumors he is not done touring -- with South America next. Time
will tell - but we thought he looked a little thinner than when we last saw
him in May. As much as my wife & I love his music we don't wish him to go
too far with it and compromise his health.

I just visited Jarkko's forum and I see that the World Tour continues
in May 2010. I can't help but think the next act will be LC coming
through the clouds with a band of angels...o, wait, that's what he's
doing already? (OK. I know that sounds rude or disrespectful, but,
holy smokes, it's just unbelievable that he is going to keep going
after two years of back-to-back three hour world-wide concerts
already. When this man does something, he does it with conviction.
Five years on Mt. Baldy; maybe five years of touring? hehe)

Perhaps we can catch a show in Macchu Picchu? I'll be looking to do a
llama-share!
