I took a SML rev D alto to a local instrument repair shop for an
estimate to repad it. Repair tech tells me it is an old horn and
although stamped made in France he doubted the origin, saying it was
most likely built in a slavic country. His opinion is that since the
horn isn't a Selmer it isn't worth investing in a rebuild.
The body is complete and sound but apparently has the original pads
and lacquer is maybe 40%. I've heard the SML is a great horn but am
beginning to doubt the wisdom of putting money into it. Maybe the
tenors have the rep and the alto mediocre?
Observations, pro and con will be greatly appreciated.
