The Grateful Dead

This was the week where the Dead played 5 "final" shows at Winterland, and
then they were going to retire. Who knew then that the retirement would last
less than 2 years? I'd only seen them twice by this time, and never at
Winterland. My girlfriend had never seen em. We figured this might be our
last chance ever. We caught the middle show of the 5, I believe. And of
course all of the shows were filmed, highlights of which later came out as
"The Grateful Dead Movie".

This was the only time I saw them with the "Wall Of Sound", a gigantic
concoction of scores of speakers stacked up precariously behind them on
stage. It was a massive sound; very loud in that little ancient building but
clear as a bell. Phil's bass notes, you could feel your bunghole vibrate.

Very long show, including my third "Dark Star" in 3 shows. It was lengthened
in the middle by a long piece (at least 30 minutes it seemed like) called
"Seastones", which was only Phil and some guy I think named Ned Lagin
(that's close anyway) on synthesizer and various electronic instruments.
This may have been the basis for their later "Space" numbers, where most of
the band could take a break while a couple members made freaky sounds. Never
cared much for that, but that was part of seeing the Dead.

Also part of seeing the Dead was the hot hippie chicks dancing on stage
without underwear, always enjoyed that! And for this show, the band had a
roadie setting off these little firebombs to coincide with power chords the
band played; it was so cool. You can see it in the movie.

After the encores, the crowd kept cheering for more, we figured we'd never
see them as a band again. Must have went on for 15 minutes, but IIRC they
didn't return that night. Still, we got a classic show lasting over 4 hours;
about all we could have hoped for.
