I started with "New Morning" and "Under the Red Sky"
just because I had a hunch I'd like them. There are a few more from the
70s and 80s I don't know.
I didn't like "Under the Red Sky" much, and think it's probably the
weakest Dylan album of any.
I definitely disagree there. I haven't heard them all, but I know I
prefer it to "Oh Mercy" and to the most recent one, which IMO is pretty
forgettable. I like it better than "Empire Burlesque," too.
Are you familiar with "Street Legal" from
Quote: 1978? Now that's a killer album that is every bit as good as anything
that came out in 1978, imo.
I know some songs from it but not the whole album. I'll get there
eventually.:)

Funny that most folks felt the same way when "Nashville Skyline" and
"Self Portrait" were released! Folks that he went and jumped off the
deep end mixin that country soft twang from what they had been used
to.
Anything with them Christmas songs to mix em up rather then the
standard fodder.
Bizzare? Yeap But I'm one of those who enjoy bizarre sounds once

I've been gone a spell...and this album is already out now.
First, I was struck by how much it sounds like one of my mom's Percy Faith
Singers Christmas albums...
I was also (pleasantly) surprised by Dylan's voice on this one...in much
better shape than it has been on his previous two albums. |

What do people think of "Under the Red Sky"?
I finally got it a few weeks ago, and I'll take it over "Together Through
Life" any day. I think I like it more than "Oh Mercy," too. Maybe not, but
IMO it's a good album.
People tend to hate that album....and I could take it or leave it for the
first 20 years.
It's only been within the past couple of years that I've really taken a
liking to it.
The songs were knocked for sounding like children's ditties. But those
songs have a certain charm to them.
Now, between the two, I'd still give the nod to OH! MERCY....but as it's one
of my favorite of all of Dylan's albums,
there's a bit of bias creeping in (some of his finest, most atmospheric
songs on OH! MERCY, me thinks).

"one of MY FAVORITES, notice it has players on it, and not his road
band that is MUSH on wheels."
I read that Charlie Sexton is now back in Bob's touring band. Is this good
news?
It can't hurt. I'd think that he'd give back some much needed "oomph" to
Dylan's live shows.
There was a definitely a difference in his shows from when he was in the
band and after he left.
On the other hand, I read what mr. musicaner wrote about "Is he
singing?"...and that might pretty well sum up
the state of the state of a Bob show these days. So long as he croaks,
gasps, and wheezes...and upsings (so every line
sounds as though it's a question)...then there's not a lot that can salvage
his live shows. |

Hey Billy,
Good to see you posting. I hope all is relatively well.
Can I get your new address, so I can send you those Leonard Cohen discs?
I've also got a few other boots to send you, that I made a few years ago I
guess, stashed away so they wouldn't smell like smoke, and just found again
last weekend. Nothing great, they're boots after all, but they're free, so
don't feel guilty about tossing them after listening.
