GrooVus will be opening the Music in the Park series at Highlands
Hammock State Park in Sebring Florida Saturday October 17th from 7-9
P.M. This event is put on by Friends of Highlands Hammock as a
fundraiser for improvements to the Park.
GrooVus will be playing a nice mix of Rock and Roll, Jazz and Blues
under the stars. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs.
GrooVus has added a wonderful female lead singer, Shannon Marrero, to
the band. GrooVus is now a six piece group featuring two saxes,
guitar, keys, bass, drums, and three lead singers amongst the group.

Sounds like a fun gig Chuck. I'm envious. I wish that I could play
more often like you. Yeah this is really me. I'm offering a fig leaf
here, you know "life is too short" and all that jazz. I apologize for
all of my previous behavior on these forums and regret that I have
offended you by my actions. I have deleted all those posts that I can
as a way of making amends. That's all I can do.

I will get it in with the next load. It will have some upgrades from
the last ones. I am enjoying the Orpheo Burnished Brass tenor right
now and am hooked on the high G key. One of the many factors in my
upgrade to the Super 400. In the R&R we do so much of, I find it that
note absolutely necessary . That and I like the adjustable stack keys
too. The Orpheo will be relegated to a backup once the Super arrives.
The high G key works and doesn't seem to affect any other notes
although I don't have an identical one without a high G to compare to.
Clearest, easiest G3, with no more resistance or effort than F3 on
tenor I have ever blown. |

I can totally agree about the Orpheo high G key (G3) - I don't use it
as an extension to the clutch of palm/side keys, but just in
conjunction with the alternate/altissimo F3 fingering using the front-
F key. Just add the G3 key to that, and it's the easiest - and more
importantly most reliable - three-fingered G3 I've ever had. Only
problem is, I now reach for that G3 key on my Martin tenor and all the
others, and of course it's not there....
I've always played E3 and F3 with the front-F key (I like the stronger
tone), and never ever used the F#3 key, preferring the low altissimo
route because I came from an era where there weren't any F#3 keys, but
this G3 key is something I've really been missing for decades - should
be standard on all saxes because a consistent G3 has always been a
tricky nore - before ! I bought the Orpheo BB tenor first (at a real
low price) and a matching alto months later, never regretted it. Only
downside is that long extra rod up the back, feels vulnerable when I
pick the sax up - but I can easilt live with that for a great G3... |

Hi Dorsetdriftwood,
Nice to hear from someone else who owns this horn. I set my Orpheo
down by the bell and RH thumbrest now to avoid any future leak on that
key. Which neck do you prefer on the tenor ? I use the brighter one
(#1) mostly as we do a lot of R&R and Blues, and some Jazz. I like the
edgier tone. The darker neck (#2) does have a very sweet tone though.
The Orpheo BB Tenor is the best bang for the buck sax I've encountered
in my 49 years on this good earth.
I have been tempted to buy the alto as a backup to my Saxgourmet
Model 6 when they are available but haven't done it yet. I don't need
it, I have a Steve Goodson Model alto for a backup , and a Yamaha 23
for those certain special gigs right now.
How do you like the alto? G3 response is no problem on the alto for me
although the fingering not as ergonomic as the high G key. Do you have
an easy G#3 fingering to transition to with the high G key?
Warning: The current new model Orpheo Signature Models on ebay are
not the same as the ones we are talking about. If it doesn't have the
high G key it is not this model. I have not seen or played the new
ones so I can't say if they are good or not. The Orpheo BB tenor I am
talking about has the high G key and has " Designed by Steve Goodson "
stamped right on the bell. It does not have a country of origin. I
have read it was made in Vietnam. Build quality is good, no visible
defects in the fit or finish. Played out of the box with very little
adjusting. I am going to get it tweaked after I have played it about
6 months and everything has settled in. |

Yes, mine are both the original Orpheo Pro's, with the high G etc..
I have an ongoing review on my website/blog -
http://cmelodysax.co.uk/saxophones/Orpheo-301-BB-tenor-sax.html
Haven't yet found an easy G#3 transition fingering for the tenor,
still using the G key, just the old faithful ones - but there may well
be one on the alto, still trying to find a good all-round mouthpiece
out of my drawer for that one tho'. Quite a heavy sax ! I use the
mellower neck on both, as my choice of mouthpieces (Lawton, Berg,
Saxscape, Couf Jazz...) are all baffled and quite bright, so it gives
me the advantage of a mellow sax plus edge from the mouthpiece - a
combination I've always used. Handy tho' to have the brighter neck in
reserve should I venture back into very loud bands again...
Considering I bought the Orpheo Pro's from Noteworthy for $500 and
$450, even by the time I'd paid shipping and UK tax/import duty, it
was amazingly good value - the pair for less than the cost of buying
one from the UK outlet. I keep saying 'Orpheo Pro' just to
differentiate between the Signature and 'ordinary' Orpheo's that also
seem to be around. |
