Alice Stuart
Clover
Steamin' Freeman

This was another of the $2.00 Tuesday night shows, featuring local talent.
And this was one that I enjoyed more than most of the others. These shows
unfrotunately didn't attract much of an audience, but they were fun while
they lasted, and you could actually get a seat (or a piece of floor if you
were so inclined) very close to the stage without lining up outside hours
before the doors opened.

I don't remember much about Steamin' Freeman, other than they were very
good, and I seem to recall a fiddle player in there somewhere. I think they
were out of Berkeley. Good solid rock music.

In a night with 3 fine acts, my favorite was Clover. They had a excellent,
engaging singer, a young guy by the name of Huey Lewis. Huey of course would
go on to his own commercial success, and Clover would eventually go to
England and be the backing band on Elvis Costello's first album. Why Clover
didn't get famous themselves is a mystery, they were that good. I'll just
fall back on the premise that there were too many great bands in those days,
and only so many of them could get famous and rich.

The headliner was Alice Stuart, a female guitarist and singer, who was
incredibly talented herself. Her band was called Snake, and they were a
great group. Stuart is another one who shoulda been famous. I wonder what
happened to her? I also saw this band open for Roy Buchanan once, and they
more than held their own.

Fantastic night of local music, all for two dollars!
