THE OFFICIAL ALT.MUSIC.MIDI MINI-FAQ
Last Modified: [06 Apr 2009]

=====

Alt.music.midi is a forum for MIDI enthusiasts to EXCHANGE
INFORMATION concerning MIDI hardware, software, tips and
techniques. As part of the culture of the group it's the
WRONG place for regularly posted commercial or eBay ads,
binaries, test messages, and requests for MIDI files.
Occasional ads for sale of used PERSONAL gear are OK.

Potential buyers of WAV-to-MID conversion software BEWARE!
This software does *NOT* live up to the claims made for it.
See the full AMM FAQ for more info and for URLs to over 20
pieces of software, some free, many with demo versions, that
you can download and test for yourself.

This MINI-FAQ is generally posted weekly to the
newsgroup alt.music.midi to:

1. Provide an overview of the newsgroup without the
burden of posting the full FAQ. (143KB)
2. Answer a few questions that are repeated often.
(For WAV-to-MID and MID-to-WAV questions, see below)
3. Provide a link to the full FAQ located at:
http://home.roadrunner.com/~cosmogony/ammfaq.html

OTHER INFORMATION - MOSTLY NETIQUETTE

Seek not to offend. Be not easily offended.

Please look over the ALT.MUSIC.MIDI FAQ and a week or so
worth of articles before posting questions. The FAQ is well
indexed, with hyperlinks, and it answers most of the usual
beginning questions and contains URLs pointing to some
excellent web sites with more advanced information.

Postings in English will reach the largest audience. If you
don't understand English well, then use what you know best.
Everyone is welcome here regardless of language.

Requests for help with pirated software are *extremely*
unwelcome. Please ignore such requests. If in doubt,
an answer referring to a specific page in the manual
will help a legitimate owner who has a manual.

USE DESCRIPTIVE TITLES. Don't say "HELP URGENT!;"
say "Help With Yamaha PSR-510."

If you post a question to the group, be prepared to read
the answer in the group, not have it emailed to you. It's
a Usenet thing.

This MINI FAQ mostly covers topics related to netiquette in
the interest of keeping the group enjoyable for everyone to
read. The full FAQ with information on MIDI located at
http://home.roadrunner.com/~cosmogony/ammfaq.html provides
considerable specific MIDI-related information as well as
links to some excellent sites with even more information.

My goal for the FAQ is to cover the basics well enough that
newcomers to MIDI can either find answers or find pointers to
answers. It is *NOT* meant to be a direct source of detailed
advanced information. There are a number of excellent sites
that fill that need and rather than repeat their content I'd
rather list the most outstanding sites in the FAQ as they come
to my attention. Feel free to bring outstanding MIDI sites to
my attention.

If you can provide a short write-up to fill in any serious gaps
in the FAQ, or have comments on the FAQ, or on the MINI FAQ,
please feel free to do so. Please don't e-mail me copies of
interesting programs or other really large attachments.
Especially do NOT email me the whole FAQ when making a
comment or suggesting a change.

If members of other newsgroups dealing with MIDI topics would
like to have this MINI FAQ posted in their newsgroups on a
fairly regular basis, please contact me. If you wish to use
the AMM FAQ on your own web site, you're free to insert a link
to it, but you may not copy the FAQ in whole or in part.

Address email TO: (not CC or BCC) quasimodo at yahoo.com. Use
a subject of "MIDI, MIDI, MIDI, MIDI" so it isn't lost in all
the spam.
